... kinda reminds me of the talk about that other knot that can 'eat itself'.
Can't think of the name of that one right at this second.
Scaffold knot maybe?
Maybe you guys can help me out again. OpLux. Is it a true 8mm rope? How about RescTech? Is it a true 8mm rope?
I have the Canyon Elite that claims to be 9mm but it’s more like 10.8mm. I like it but I’d rather have the smaller diameter rope if it’s a true 8mm.
This is exactly the way I get back up if I need to come down in a hurry. This way I can leave my single stick up the tree with all my gear, this way I can easily get back up. This was the video I found and learned this technique to ascend.Have anyone came across and than tried this method? Seems to be a pretty safe use of the fig 8
It works well until it doesn’t…there is a someone on here who took a decent drop doing this method so be careful.

Yep. That was me. Once again, I will say that I am an idiot for not having it backed up. Having said that, it can be near impossible at times to release the lock with decent control.
I think I'll give it a try (maybe with a prusik or something like that above). Like we say over here: no risk, no fun And it is one more option to climb and decent a tree
That method is trash in my opinion. Lots of safety issues and not smooth at all.Have anyone came across and than tried this method? Seems to be a pretty safe use of the fig 8
Thank you for this serious warning, I will definitely take note of this and carefully test the whole thing first. The impact after 12 feet of free fall is definitely no fun. I hope you haven't been hurt too much. But how can that happen?Hey, you’re a grown man, so do what you want. I will tell you that unlike some other rappel methods, this one can absolutely let you go into a free fall. I’m not talking about a white-knuckle, faster than normal, low friction rappel. I mean, ZERO friction free fall. That’s what happened to me. From 12’ to flat on my back on the ground in a millisecond

This happened about a year and half ago. I had a CT scan, but everything was ok. I was sore for at least a month.
To answer your question about how it can happen: the whole thing can invert and spill. That’s what happened to me. There was so much friction that I had to use a ton of force to release and descend. When it finally released, I had no control to stop it from inverting. You can see for yourself at ground level what happens if you keep pulling the small eye of the eight past horizontal.
Yup, can definitely invert if not holding the braking end in one specific spot…handy for using an 8 to go up a tree in a climb of shame if your rope is flexible enough to work with it, but the rappel is sketchy, at least with our small ropes. Might be way better and safer with 11mm, dunno.

Thanks for your advices. I'll try both 9 and 11 mm ropes.
