First fall in many years of hunting...

It was tied at end with carabiner loading knot... was all wrong, that was the last prussic in my rig. It's gone now got a closed loop 10mm but it is on my secondary linemans belt which is 11.5mm rope.. only used as a holder while going over branches.. my bridges are now 11.5mm 24strand like my climbing rope and the ends are closed loops with carabiners as well..
I understand that. But do you know if it looks like this?

Nope not now.. no knots just the loop and friction loops(6)... my old one looked like that, the one that came untied ... but it was Lowes rope not real rope probably why.. must have stretched
I understand. Lol. I’m glad you got it fixed up. And that you were safe. But those are two different knots in those photos. Do you know which one was used on your prussik?

Can you provide a picture of the knot you were using? It’s not possible for the Prusik hitch to unravel so I’m assuming you mean the knot you tied to close the loop right? Just curious what you were using, Double fisherman’s, overhand?

You were using Lowe’s rope for your Prusik cord? You were lucky!

One of my worst fears. Had a similar encounter, but was climbing down on a stick that unset itself. Glad I was double tethered to the tree. Glad you're okay!

I've fallen once while setting up a tree stand and because of that I am always checking my equipment. Falling is not fun! check and recheck. It's sooo simple and can save your life.

I'd been thinking of adding a secondary prussic and carbiner to my tether on the slack but it would be just another prussic/carbinter attached to my bridge. Is it possible to buy a pre-made fixed loop prussic that I can trust rather than try to tie my own?

You could just hook your linesman’s belt to your tether and run it as a secondary bridge

Aero makes a really good one that I bought and use for my adjustment method on my lanyard. (https://aerohunter.us/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=60&product_id=81) I went away from using a Ropeman on my lanyard after I read how they (and other tooth-using grabbing devices) can bite into the rope in a catastrophic fall (like what we're all talking about) and cause the line to part. I still use a Ropeman with my lineman's belt as I'm much closer to the tree so the "catastrophic fall" problem is mitigated, (although not eliminated), but still have the tail double figure 8'd to my carabiner, although admittedly beneath the Ropeman....so yes I'm mixing paranoid conservatism with a little good old fashioned trust...haha

awaiting my saddle as a means to finally get off the ground after a tree stand fail in 2009. So glad I intend to wait until 2020 to use in the woods but your post has me sweating bullets today! However, I am glad you shared/posted so I can reevaluate my plans and order a Ropeman1!

I’ve started using 30# braided fishing line and sewing my tag ends of my double fisherman and figure 8 knots. Anybody else do this?

I figured doubled up it makes 60# per loop and I usually loop it at least a dozen times so that should be like 720# to support the knot

You don’t need a ropeman. It is far and away less safe than a friction hitch. What you need is to learn, in depth, how these things work and pro and con them for yourself. 100% this guy fell due to user error or using a commercially produced product that was either being used outside its specs or wasn’t properly manufactured in the first place.

First off, I'm glad you're OK. I want to thank you for sharing your "screw up" with us. I've made mistakes and shared them too. It's a good way to learn from each other.

From what I understand, you're mistake was to use non-climbing rope and an overhand knot for your prusik loop instead of climbing rope with a double-fisherman knot. I never considered what you did would be dangerous but now I can see why!

As I don't have a proper saddle and use a home made "ass sling" in conjunction with a rock climbing harness, I'm always connected to my tether in two spots. I use a prusik made with climbing accessory rope and double fisherman knots to connect my "ass sling" above a ropeman connected to my harness. When I get situated in the tree I let my weight transfer into my sling until I'm comfy.

I use a speedy stitcher and put three or four stitches on the tag ends of every knot. Peace of mind as knots are pretty much impossible to untie with that treatment.
