Camped a lot when I was younger but it was always at premade campsites with the family - decided I wanted to get into backpacking and just returned from my first solo expedition unscathed.

Summary - It was AWESOME I had a blast! I made a fire, slept like a log, woke up and fished for a half a day, took a nap and hiked out. Next trip will be a little further towards the middle of nowhere.

Where'd you go? I'm planning a bear hunt in the N Georgia mountains this fall and I'm gonna try to head up and do some scouting in July or august. Looks like a fun trip!

This was at my hunting club in Jasper, but the next one will be either on Dawson forest WMA or Blue Ridge WMA.

Let me know when you decide to come, Ill throw in with you if you got room!

You'll never want to camp in a campground again....
Campgrounds are a last resort. I avoid them like the plague.
I like to backpack, but something even better is float trip camping.
Load the canoe up and not have to worry about every ounce of weight like you do when carrying a pack.
Got a 70 mile trip planned on the Allegheny River.

I love backpacking. I’ve come to despise being around other people when I camp, listening to their kids scream and the radio blaring. Most of the time when me and the wife go we don’t see another soul and I love it!

Silly question from a noob: how do you get back from that? Does someone pick you up at a predetermined location?

They shuttle our vehicle. They meet us at the put in and they drive our vehicle so it is at the take out when we arrive.

Brother in law and I did a 3 day 30 mile trail in PA (west rim trail) a couple years ago. Weather was a monsoon for 2 days but was a great trip. You’ve found a new rabbit hole to go down.

Great thread. I've daydreamed about a river or backpacking trip in Maine , NH, PA or the Adirondacks like people do out west . Have done some backpacking in white mountains. ( w/o hunting)
I have a good amount of backpack / camping gear that sadly sees little use as my daughters are not into it enough.

River trips are the best! The more we run rivers, the less use our backpacks are getting!
If you really want to live large, book a raft excursion on a western river. Colorado R, Salmon R, Snake R, Selway R, Chico/Chilcotin/Frasier R, all have tremendous trips available from a few (too) short days, all the way up to 15 (or more) days down the Colorado thru the Grand Canyon. That's a trip that you will never forget. And it's high class river camping. Guides prepare insanely good meals all the way up to day 15.
The Boundary Waters in MN also has more options than a person could do in a lifetime.

When I was younger, I used to do overnight trips down by the railroad tracks along the river. I had a concealed carry permit and brought a small 38 snubnose for backup. I like backups. A herd of deer woke me up one night as they were running through the woods and encountered my tent and stopped. The showed up nicely in my flashlight.
