This is my 1st year trying saddle hunting after spending hours and hours on this site all last winter and this summer. Got my saddle (kestrel) used on this site. Did my first practice shots from the saddle a few weeks before the season started and realized I LOVE shooting out of a saddle. Having the saddle stabilize me is great for my consistency.
Anyway, got up really early this morning so I could take my time getting set up well before sunrise (still takes me 30 to 60 minutes to get up and set in the tree in the dark carefully and quietly). About an hour after sunset I had 2 small bucks and a doe with a couple fawns all within 40 yards. Momma doe walked to the base of my tree. She looked up at me 3 times, but between the saddle keeping me steady, my ghillie suit, and good canopy backdrop, she settled down. She browsed off quartering away. At 8 yards I shot her and could tell it was a good shot.
My bow is shooting really quiet this year and none of the other deer spooked much at the shot. My family really needs the venison and I'm hard pressed for hunting time, so I decided to take one of the bucks if he gave me an opportunity. 20 minutes later he gave me an under-20 yard shot slightly quartering-to. Put it behind his shoulder and he ran off with blood shooting out. Watched/heard him crash 10 seconds later about 50 yards away.
I feel so fortunate to get two deer early this year-it's a big pressure off me now. I love saddle hunting. It is so much more comfortable to me than stand hunting and I love the ease of shooting in any direction. Thank you everyone on here for all the information, opinions, how-tos, etc etc. My family and I thank you. Happy hunting everyone. Stay safe.
