I‘m wondering if anybody had tried cooking fresh fish in an air fryer. I’m talking about crappie, catfish, etc. I love ‘em deep-fried. Will an air fryer would do anywhere near as well? and be more healthy. Share your wisdom with me!

For me I prefer deep fried just mainly to me it’s seem like it’s got more flavor than the air fry. Unhealthy way is usually gonna have the best flavor 9/10 times.

Probably not an air fryer is more like a mini convection oven that heats up faster. The reason a deep fryer works better is it flash cooks the outside quick cause the oil is super hot and all around it. Where the air fryer shines with that stuff is reheating something that was previously fried cause it will keep it crispy instead of it getting soggy. Hope that helps

It turns out very well BUT you can’t really fit much in there it takes a long time to get enough fish for more than 2 people to eat at once. I bake all my breaded fish in the oven. I will pan fry without breading occasionally but 99 out of 100 I’m baking them.

Thanks guys. I thought it was probably too good to be true. I might just buy a deep fryer. Or maybe I should give baking fish a try? But I love love Love fried fish!!!

Do you bake the fish because you prefer it baked or because of health concerns?

Frying them in grease is fantastic, but a less-involved, quick-dinner type option is to use the broiler setting in the oven, especially for a mild, flaky-fleshed fish like crappie. Just sprinkle on your favorite seasoning (Cracker Girl is MONEY, if you haven't tried it), lightly brush with olive oil or butter, and give the fillets about 3 minutes per side on top of aluminum foil. Super quick and easy, and the clean-up involves nothing more than putting away your seasoning and tossing the aluminum foil in the trash--can't beat that!

Yeah you can’t go wrong with cast iron!
One of my favorite venison steak recipes is butterfly back strap, salt & pepper cooked in real butter in an iron skillet.

I’m going to have to try this!

I can get it local but maybe not for most of y'all reading. Their preseasoned breading on fish is very good

I like my air fryer for wings, and sausage more than anything. Most Things breaded and fried suck in the air fryer, Keto friendly breading and your double dipping in the suck sauce. Now a seasoned fish filet spritzed with olive oil is good in the air fryer. Think of it as a compact convection oven instead of a fryer.

I’ve never had a convection oven. But I think I get the idea. But the phrase “Double Dipping in the suck sauce” is Hilarious and very quotable! Thanks for that.

I love deer cubed steak seasoned floured and smothered in onion gravy. About the worst thing I’ve cooked was cube steak with coconut flour and fried in the air fryer.
If t wasn’t completely the air fryer at fault as it was pretty bad fried in a pan.

Honestly, I prefer it. Also, I have 5 in my family and I like getting all the fish done at once.

My go to method is as follows:

Dry fish with paper towel
Roll in mix of flower and original Shore Lunch
Dip in egg
Roll in mixture of crushed Corn flakes, black pepper, and parsley flakes.
place on olive oil covered baking sheet
convection bake at 400

Sounds good. I’ll try this too

I’ve been using the lodge cast iron chicken fried for about 20 years now. They don’t make it as a kit any more so you will have to buy the basket and thermometer separate. At least I can’t find it. I wanted to give one to my brother and buddies as gifts before. I love the thing.
Here are the pics of mine. About time for a new basket.

This is what I’ve found on amazon that I think is the same.

Lodge L10CF3 5Qt Deep Skillet, 5-Qt, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00063RWXO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TELYEbBFNDXTE

This basket is recommended for the pot above but isn’t the same basket I have. It’s a 4in basket and will stick up above your pot. Not a big deal for cooking unless you get a spill over and grease fire and want to put the lid on to another it. But my smaller basket will sit inside of my skillet with the handle folded in and I can put the lid on it to store it compactly.

Lodge 10FB2 Deep Fry Basket, 10.25-inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000050AV5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4MLYEb61MSAZM

And this thing is a must for cast iron. I’ve been seeing it around for years but didn’t believe the hype. I finally bought one after my brother tried it. Better than steel wool, scotch brite, and those pads that look like stainless steel drilling shavings. I’m gonna buy another one for my sink in the basement where I clean my big pots.

Guys at my fire station practically live on a Everglades Heat seasoning diet

I think every seasoning we’ve tried from Everglades has been good
