Florida saddle hunter meet up continued:

Which date would you prefer for a saddle hunter meet up and hog hunt in Florida?

I'm liking the February date as well and I will be camping too. Which campground are you looking to reserve, and will there be lake/river access? I really enjoy hunting from my skiff is my reason.
I will message you when I get out of the woods today about the campsites. But short answer to your question, there are 2 public boat ramps within short driving distance as well as a canoe/kayak launch

I will most likely be attending. Not going to vote for a date. I'll try to make whichever is most popular. I just started hunting last year and started hunting out of a saddle, so I'm looking forward to this. Thanks for setting this up.

The poll says closed .....of course it doesn't give a definitive answer hahahaha

Where are u located @RookieJD

Only 8 votes....doesn't look like much enthusiasm anyway

I'm in Volusia. I had already planned on checking Lake George out after deer season on hopes of finding some hogs to hunt. I rode through a section a few weeks ago on the way home from Ocala.

We had some response but only 8 votes on line and one person reached out via text to talk to cast a vote, pretty much everyone else said this might work or this won’t work… So in the interest of getting it set up and seeing how it goes……. It looks like February 5 and 6 won by the narrowest of margins. That is two weeks before saddle palooza. By then the weather should be cooler. The camp grounds will be open. There won’t be as much water on the ground in some of the swamp areas and most importantly there won’t be as many ticks and mosquitoes. Now that we have a date nailed down, please message me on here if you are going, how many will be in your party, and whether or not you intend on camping. This will allow me to make sure there is an adequate amount of burgers for people to eat on Saturday. I can reserve camp sites if you prefer or… you can use the information below to reserve your own

Camping:
Camping is prohibited during the general gun season, except camping is allowed year round at the Volusia County Group Camping campsite, but only by permit from Volusia County (386-736-5953). During the remainder of the year, camping is allowed, but only at other designated campsites by permit from the St. Johns River Water Management District at http://www.sjrwmd.com/lands/recreation/camping/ or (386-329-4404). Permits must be requested at least 7 days in advance of the requested camping dates.

I personally reserved in the St. John’s water management district lake George pine island area. Barrs road and the other site are all along the lake and all within a couple miles of each other. It only takes about two minutes to reserve one over the internet and it doesn’t cost anything. Important notice though it is primitive camping only, no campers or RV’s. We usually hammock camp but since we will be at the truck, I’ll probably set up a truck bed tent instead.

I too usually hammock camp and I'm considering that. I'll post when I make up my mind.

I will be tent camping. . .do they have site numbers or just set-up shop wherever? Just would like to know as to be a group. "Canopy Stalker", let me know if you need help with the food. . .I've had a good season so far this year and have plenty of deer/bacon burger to go around.

I left a post above on Dec 27, the links at the bottom have the available sites. You reserve an area and it’s set up wherever in that area. I reserved ours in “lake George pine island” area, but the other 2 spots in lake George are also nice, I’ve camped at the lake George barrs area before.

And you’d be more than welcome to set up next to our camp if that makes it easier.

I will check into it and if not, I will take you up on your offer. I have never hunted that side of the lake before, only off the west side, and never camped over there either. . .this will be new ground for me. I will keep you posted on what I come up with. Seriously - let me know about the food situation, I can take care of deer burgers (if anyone eats that nasty stuff??? - LOL), and if I find some time to put some sausage together I'll do that too! Keep me posted.

Spent my entire life until about 13 years ago in Volusia county. Kids and wife both born there,

I'll be there the Saturday for sure but I don't think I can swing camping and being gone from home for a weekend 2 times in the shortest month.... I planned saddlepalooza since last year.... The good thing about these local get togethers is there could easily be more than 1 a year....u wouldn't have to twist my arm to hang out and talk hunting during the off season.

If we set up with you do we still have to register or do you have it covered with a group site?
The group site I reserved is only for a group of 6 (maximum per spot) so I would try to reserve separately.
