Fractional yardage for a rangefinder necessary?

Is having a rangefinder that gives fractional yardage necessary for hunting and 3d shooting?

In my search for a new rangefinder this is my one hang up. My current rangefinder only reads whole yards. I haven’t noticed it effecting where my shot landed but maybe I’m not a good enough archer to tell the difference.

I think new technology is way better than it use to be, which means for a few cents more they can add the decimal place. Make you think your getting a high end piece of equipment. 200yrd plus shooting competition it might come into play. Archery???? Maybe for Bowmar.

I saw how the sig's had crip glass and cut through fog when I was trying them at TAC. They actually have a fog setting. We had a bunch of targets at 60+ that were difficult or not able to range. 1000006219.jpg I was leaning in then reminded myself that TAC was the only time I would be in that situation where I needed long distance and fog capabilities. Inside 40 my 2019 vortex ragers still worked fine.....maybe I should have used a life line to the support thread....NAAAH.

The rangefinder I’m leaning towards has a Forrest setting that is supposed to work in fog/snow brush and shady conditions.

I never paid attention to not having fractional readouts until I started looking for a new rangefinder. But now I’m thinking maybe I need it lol. I’ve never once ranged then made a shot and said that half yard got me.

I can’t think of any scenario where a partial yard would make a difference. My execution is waaaay more important than .6 yards difference
I think you’re right. I don’t recall seeing any videos where they called out 86.3 yards when they ranged. Maybe be over thinking it.

I've never seen a sight tape with half yard marks either. How much is your arrow gonna drop for you to need to hold for a half yard difference?

I wouldn't want fractional yardages. More clutter in a hunting situation and it will take slightly longer to read.

Does the fog mode work well? What fog level can it still range in? (probably hard to define fog level....most rangefinders will not work if there is any visible fog)

I haven’t paid that much attention to mine to be honest. Reason for this thread is there are multiple rangefinders that do this, bow hunters tend to go down rabbit holes so I figured someone here has ran one and could weigh in.

But I do agree totally

Maven claims to be able to also, I’m currently leaning towards their crf.1

Shooting fixed pins at 10 yrd spacing I dont have much space between pins more than to estimate qtr increments (2 1/2 yrds) between. And on my good days, I can frequently be w/in 1-2 inches out to 50 yrds so a 1/2 yard wouldn't matter to me.

I have their RF1 and really like it. I’m not sure of the fog cutting but I’ve used it hunting and at TAC and it does well. The Leupold Full Draw 5 is well rated too. Both have the red readout which I will never go back to a black one. I’ve used the Maven for 3-4 seasons now.

I would bet a double cheeseburger that less than one percent of archers and bowhunters can shoot a fractional yard difference. Most would be way better off to spend the time throughout the year to practice field judging distance to stuff 25 yards or less. With just a small amount of practice you can get surprisingly good, like within a yard. Then the majority of the time you wont even need the rangefinder. But they are handy hunting on the edge of a field or plot or in more open timber where a 30-40 yard shot might present for a compound shooter.

Maybe it because of how thick our woods are and the lack of visibility most of the time but other than ranging objects I can only remember 1 time I had time to range a critter.....99% of the time there's no time to be messing with ranging. I use my rangefinder as binos more often than using it to range stuff

I have 1.from tidewe and it is fractional and I'm not a fan.....I'll take the whole number if I had a choice. Red display is major upgrade thou

At the bottom of the mountain where I was trying them there was not enough fog to test them out. Everyone was having issues with the fog so that was the topic of discussion at the glass booths. What I was impressed with the sigs was how fast the target acquisition was and how clear the glass was on one of the lower end ones.
