Gaia

One issue with onx is that it defaults to try to sign in and use maps over cell signal. This is a real problem if you have a tiny bit of terrible service, it's better to have all or none. One fix it to put it on airplane mode so it just goes straight to the downloaded map. The only problem with this is you can't text or call, which when you're wife is super pregnant, that's not an option :)

Makes perfect sense. While in the field I typically leave mine in airplane mode(no pregnant wife) just to save on battery life which has been a blessing due to having plenty of juice to navigate my way in, send a text or two, and navigate my way out. Unless I’m sending my wife a msg(letting her know where I am and when I’m climbing down) then airplane mode it is, even while using the Gaia app

I have used all the ones you mentioned and I’m assuming you mean by “pull in and get out for elsewhere” that you mean you’ll have it for when you get into the field. If so, I can do this headache free with Gaia. Only issue is when in satellite mode the image is a little blurry when zoomed in. I basically just use the topo, hiking map, and property lines in the layering system. If I want details of satellite imagery then I just use google earth from the laptop at home

Try the World Imagery layer - it's super where I hunt.

I mea
I mean that I have sometimes better quality data more tuned to my liking for things like
Contours
Trails and roads
Water
Years of stand locations

I need at a minimum to be able to import/export gpx or other standard formats. Even better would be the ability to display and layer shapefiles and similar, and ideally user supplied images (e.g. Geotiff, geopdf, etc.)

Because monetizing subscriptions to free data is so much more profitable, a lot of these apps are making it difficult or impossible to pull in my data, and don't always offer something similar.

This seems a little more complex then what I do. I’m not sure I can recommend anything that is this complex(I’m old and technology is not my strong point)

Tried it using my iPhone. It’s a little blurry when zoomed in all the way but still looks ok. Might be better on a computer.

Thanks for the info

Answering my own question - Gaia does it all (onx can apparently do some import/export on the website, pretty sure you need the 500/year sibling of huntstand to do it, but Gaia has what I need).

Mostly I want to
1 pull in old waypoints I have saved
2 for areas without much topography, generate say 1-ft contours from public state data to overlay on photos to find subtle dips and rises.
3 overlay trails that I have mapped as well

Thanks for this - I'd never seen it before. Other than a huge cloud over part of my area, it's great (kinda funny seeing topo lines on a cloud). I usually use the USGS aerial. Wish there was a "time" feature like in Google Earth so I could find base aerial layers with leaves down.

This is awesome! There seems like a lot to figure out but it will be a great help on my out of state hunts.

How do you download maps for off line viewing?

Another thing I like about Gaia. The OnX map would charge me for each state

I’m a surveyor and I hunt out of state quite a bit. I use neither GAIA or OnX. I have DeLorme (now Garmin) Earthmate and I love it. I use it almost daily.

PROS:
Runs in airplane mode

Syncs with my computer so everything I save (waypoints/tracks) in the field are automatically transferred to my laptop

I can create waypoints and tracks on my laptop and they are automatically stored in my phone when I have it plugged in.

I get access to all 50 states data.

Data includes parcels, USGS topo maps, color aerial imagery, parcels, game management units, public land surveying layer (range/township/section), streetmap, NOAA harbor charts, NOAA Harbor Charts, NOAA Harbor Inset Charts, NOAA Ocean Charts......those are the ones I’ve used so far

You don’t have to store all the data, you simply zoom in to the area of interest and the app shows the available data for that area. No guessing which quad you need data from

$29/yr

CONS:

Aerial photography is a year or more behind Google maps

Aerial photography is taken in the summer (this is the same everywhere for whatever ignorant reason. Personally, I think it should be illegal to take aerial photography while the leaves are on the tree)

I tried gaia earlier this week. The review were great but the satellite imagery was old in my area. And when zoomed in it was even older. I canceled my subscription. I have been an Onx user for 3 years now and obviously I am not happy with it or I would not have tried something else. I am also testing Huntstand now. While I agree with another comment, the screen seems busy but I think the satellite imagery is superior to OnX.

GAIA does all this.

Good deal. Like I said, I’ve never used any of the others. I’ve had the Earthmate for several years now and really like it. Never see anyone else mention it so I figured I would throw it out there as a viable option.

Ok, I now use GAIA and it’s better than the Earthmate. Earthmate absolutely sucks and I’m sure it’s no coincidence that it happened after they were bought by Garmin. Went duck hunting this morning and all my waypoints and routes are gone. I even entered waypoints that I knew the Lat/Lon for and as soon as I would view them they would go away.

Downloaded GAIA this afternoon to use in the morning and I really like it.

Used GAIA today. Very happy. Even has an option to have sunrise and sunset on the display.

Must be a damn good spot to take the time to memorize the lat/long of it!

I think y’all have convinced me into switching over to GAIA.
