Gear Hauling and Safety?

Another thing to consider is the climbing method. If you're not using a rope method to climb, you need to be careful with what is on your back. You don't want things shifting on you that can through your balance off. So if you take anything up, it must not be able to move on you.

id like to add on to what @Allegheny Tom had mentioned about a cell phone and say that you should always keep a knife of some kind on you as well, somewhere accessible. you just never know if you need to cut a rope to free yourself in an emergency
Whitewater paddlers often have a knife attached to their life jackets for quick and easy access in the event someone, or boats and entangled and ropes need cut asap.
Knives should be easily accessible for guys climbing trees, too.

Even if you leave your gear at the base of the tree there's still a chance you will land on it when you fall. I've never seen anyone wear a climbing helmet when they climb a tree. Smacking your head is probably way more likely than falling all the way to the ground if you stay tied in.

I have 65' of ECW accessory/prussic cord that I tied an alpine butterfly in the middle of with a climbing rated carabiner clipped to it. I either clip the carabiner to my saddle as I ascend; or to the girth hitch loop of my climbing line, if I am climbing SRT (that way it also can double as a line removal system as well). I tie or clip my bow to one end, and my pack to another, ascend, and haul my stuff up after I'm set!

I have always climbed with my pack as I hunt in some cold, cold weather and many times dress in the tree from my treestands. Evcen when I do hang and hunts and use a stand. This year being new to saddle hunting, I am still climbing with my pack but having my lower body dress and putting my upper layers on while hanging in my saddle. Bought a new pnuma heated vest for just this reason. My pack is a HornHunter and I won't be going real minimal as I am not too worried about weight, more about comfort and being able to sit all day. Iowa from Oct. 28th to Nov. 20th will call for food and comfort on those long sits. Shawn
