Good Read for mapping

I do have the book and it's great when hunting the hills, but more commonly, I hunt very flat flood prone riverbottoms.

I now use the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) shading option in Caltopo and can do 3' elevation increments. For me, 20' in this area is completely useless - 3' determines if I need my hip boots, chest waders, or canoe.

This little amount of change is also indicative of ground that produces gum tress vs oak trees. This, combined w/google earth pro historical imagery is what is use in the river bottoms.

Is this option only available with a paid subscription? If it's on the base package, do you mind talking a guy through how you do it? I've been looking for a while and can't find anything.

Yes - I’m happy to help. I’m away on vacation now and did not bring computer. I’m back 12/24 so I can try to provide detailed instructions after first of year. Don’t feel bad if I need a gentle reminder lol. You do NOT need a paid subscription

If anyone is interested in a book on how to find does and scrub bucks, I can write that book. Seriously, 30 plus years of avoiding big bucks. I have this down to a science. I accept PayPal and Venmo if any publishers out there want dibs on this masterpiece.

Is the book called Mapping Trophy Whitetails or Mapping Trophy bucks? I type in Mapping Trophy Whitetails and Mapping Trophy Bucks pops up.

Would you be willing to share your DEM layer saved settings?

Yes, I’m happy to help. It might be easier to walk you through it live instead of typing it out. I have typed it out before so I’ll try to find it and at least share the link. May be week after next as I’m traveling through next Friday.

You bet - feel free to hit me with a PM 1/21 as reminder. I'll try to find the write-up, but I can walk you through the process for sure...

I bought that book years ago and sold it diddnt help very flat where i live
Any insight on what to look for in flat country on maps?
I'm not super familiar with flat land, but I do know that even very slight relief in topography will funnel deer. It's probably more important to notice the subtle rolls in flat land. Like Red mentioned vegetative transitions are probably more important in super flat land. I used to hunt a field on my buddies property, it had an almost negligible swale going down the middle, but you could almost bet the farm that when deer crossed that field they'd be in that swale. It would just about hide they're legs when they crossed. You could probably hide an infantry company in there, and I doubt it barely shows up on a topo map.

That was mostly helpful, I'll PM you later.

It’s by Brad Herndon I believe. I have wanted to get a cartographer and programmer together for a app that is based on the book for years. Cross reference ack and forth from on x and google earth is work.

That’s the book I mentioned. The best scouting book ever. Now if only google would add its content to the earth program we hunters would be set.

You can add topo maps as layers in GE.

Yes an over laying layers ,not pin pointing/highlighting all the terrain features discussed in the book. If google would be able to do that then timeline history of weather conditions for a certain time of day. Wind direction, conditions and thermal of how it is doing in a time lapse with how it is doing when obstructions are in the pathway such as boulders and piles of dirt, rocks and ditches. Wind, soil, seasonal conditions all determine how to hunt an area. The virtual scouting outfitter guide program.

It’s one of a few books that are must haves.

I find it funny someone would be interested in becoming a better hunter but too cheap and lazy to seek out and read a book. Sad chit
