Gun for my son(6 year old).

If you already have an AR-15 size lower it is a no brainer to go 6.5 Grendel. I have two of them and have killed deer with both. One with 120 Speer Gold Dot and the other 120 Sierra Pro Hunter with handloads. BANG FLOP on both. The 120 Speer Gold Dot is one AWESOME bullet. The Sierra was OK. Even without a muzzle brake device the 6.5 Grendel has virtually no recoil. Put on a brake and it's like a 22lr. BUT, you can honestly shoot WAAAAAAY out there with one. For a light easy handling rifle a 16" or 18" barrel is perfect.

My "adopted" grandson who is 7 years old killed his first deer this year. A BIG doe at 50 yards with a 22-250 55 gr SP Winchester ammo. Perfect heart shot. His real Grandfather who was with him said the deer jumped up mule kicked stumbled about 40 yards and nose dived into the ground. I helped butcher the deer and a 30-06 would have done less damage. Complete pass through but PULPED the vitals and blood shot half the offside shoulder.

I love my 22-250. Never had a deer talk crap after I hit one with it. They don’t usually go far. Turn insides into mushy jello. Had deer go further and live longer after hitting them with a 7mm mag

I helped do crop damage control for 15 years and have killed hundreds of deer. 7mm Rem mag was the WORST caliber for having deer run off if CNS was not hit no matter what bullet I or my partner used. When found they sloshed on the inside but would run 100 yards or so.

Yup. Aweful. I tried bunches of bullets. Some say due to bullet speed but the 22250 hauls butt to so. Maybe a combo of speed and weight ?

The deer killingest round I ever used is the 25-06. Yep it is fast but over 90% of the time it drops them in their tracks. Those that don't drop don't go far.

I may have to give a 25-06 a try. I was thinking about a 6.5 CM for deer, however the 25-06 is intriguing. I never considered myself recoil adverse however I have noticed a flinch when I shoot my .308. I shoot 3.5" for turkey and geese and don't mind the recoil so I was a little surprised that I was flinching with the 308. I reduced the flinch with practice however I am thinking why not shoot a gun that has minimal recoil.

25-06 is my favorite deer caliber, it's just hard to find cartridges unless online.

I was reading a thing online tapeworm...shooting my 31/2” loads from my 12ga pump generates more recoil than a .458 and .480 elephant gun. Of course the elephant gun weighs 11 pounds but still. Crazy we shoot such harsh loads at such a small bird haha
I have a 416 hoffman, basically a 416 remington, it’s obnoxious to say the least, I also have several 3.5” 12 gauge 870’s which as you know grab your attention, I would say the punch to the shoulder is about the same, however the concussion the 416 makes is much worse, it really rattles your head, I wear earplugs and the biggest muffs you can buy lmao. The worst recoil I have ever felt in my life was a 458 in ruger number 1, with no rubber pad, stupid to say the least.

I used to have a ported 375 JDJ pistol and it was the same way. The recoil was pretty stiff along with impressive concussion. Under a metal roof at the range it gave you this weird feeling in your sinuses.

Ahh yes a 458 ruger #1 I shot one of those... once!

I started mine off with a AR platform in 6.8 SPCII. It’s a great round and they have killed a lot with it. If I’d do it again, I’d use the 6.5 creedmoor. It’s a more popular round with more ammo options and easier to find. Well use to be. The 6.8 sometimes doesn’t have good blood trails on good hits but they haven’t went far. It would be a better round if they would load it hotter to its potential but ammo companies play it safe because there are some SPCI chambers out there and it can’t handle the hotter loads of the SPCII. At least that’s how it was explained to me. They use to load a SPCII military round to the hotter loads but I hadn’t seen them in years. Would be great to reload.
Creedmoor drops them and I don’t think it kicks any different than the 6.8. I love that gun.

Thank you for the detailed response. You made many great points. I have thought the same about the copper bullets for the .300 black out. I also have some Winchester xp 150 grain that are plated I will get sighted in and try. I know that the gun is shooting around 2000fps so bullet choice is important. I never considered the lower speeds effecting the all copper bullets expansion.

Thanks fellas for all the responses.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty darn sure 2000 FPS is getting at if not very near as in les than 10% near to the minimum acceptable velocity at which copper bullets are designed to reliably expand on game.
I'd definitely consult who ever makes any copper bullet you are using or are considering to see what is the minimum velocities they will expand with absolute reliability

I’d generally agree with the copper bullet concerns you have. However, I’m pretty sure the tac tx bullets were designed for the 300 blackout. At least some of them are. I’ve yet to take any game with that bullet but my brothers friend has shot several deer and even a few African animals with them out of a blackout and had great performance.

The 7mm-08 and 6.5 CM are really good choices for kids but dont overlook the 243win All 3 would be really good choices...And as someone else mentioned the 25-06 is an absolute deer killing machine but may tickle a little too much for a kid

I’ve shot stuff with a lot of calibers. My wife loves my 7-08. Very smooth shooting/recoiling gun. I like big booms. I use my 22250 because it’s a hammy down from my grandfather. I’ve killed em with 243, 270, 6.5, 7-08, 300, 30-06, 7mm mag. They all kill em just the same. They can’t tell a difference
