Gun safety rule #4: Be sure of your target and everything beyond your target

Curious if the victim had orange on, if the shooter had alcohol in his system, priors, poor vision/visibility, etc. The article is pretty light on details.

Tragic, and a reason I don't always feel bad missing opening day (gun) in Michigan.

My neighbor was telling me. That, in the county in which we live, you can use a rifle but only from an elevated stand.
I only bow hunt anymore.

Always hate hearing these stories. Sounds like it was an accident but still terrible.

He was wearing an orange hat and on his own private property and the shooter was trespassing and didn’t even identify what he was shooting. Just shot at movement.

Wow. Sucks to hear that. Very sad life changing situation for both sides.

Don’t know the full story but obviously the shooter broke one of the cardinal rules of gun safety. Something like this should never happen but unfortunately does quite often around the country.

What about guys that look at other hunters thru their scope? There are some real idiots out there that should never be allowed to carry a weapon. With all the gun hunters in most states it’s shocking we don’t have many more deaths. Thankfully a majority practice good gun safety and promote it to those around them. Accidents happen but a very large portion are very easily prevented just by following the four simple gun rules.

Thanksgiving morning I had a neighbor to m bosses farm drive up on a utv to let me know I needed to wear orange. Upon approaching e said oh I see your wearing orange. He then proceeded to tell me how him and his seven year old son couldn’t see my orange and were following me with their scope trying to decide if I was a deer they should shoot. The only thing he did right that day was have his son with him when he pulled up to me. I was nice. I explained I had my orange on but even If I hadn’t how did he figure him pointing a rifle at any living thing he hadn’t identified, on a property he didn’t have permission to hunt was my fault. The fact he was teaching it to his son was just as bad. Then I explained to them that by law I had to wear orange hunting. Foresters, hikers, hunters just scouting, people looking for arrowheads, and anyone else who wants to spend time outdoors can wear brown, tan, grey, or any other color they want. During this I realized I knew his dad. I couldn’t be ugly with his kid their so I called his dad and told him to take back whatever he had for his son and grandson for Christmas. They needed binoculars far worse than anything else and if he had an extra pair he should go ahead and let them borrow them until Santa came.
I had something similar happen on public 20 years ago. I was sitting on the ground on a fire break. Literally watched the guy walk onto the firebreak and look at me in my orange vest from about a hundred yards then throw his rifle up looking through the scope. My actions weren’t as cordial back then. I think he got the message from a hundred yards but I know he understood by the time I had cut that distance to 75 yards:smirk: Funny what a difference a couple decades make.

Deer look nothing like people. I can't understand how people shoot at things they "thought" were deer. I don't hunt public during firearms seasons.

i don't believe in hunting "accidents", were someone is shot. Hunting accidents to me are things like falling from a stand. About two years ago, a guy came home to his house and found a hole thru his window and into the wall. he lived in a subdivision. The property next to the house was leased for hunting. To me , in Florida elevation is safer because of the height of the shrubs and other fuels. Most shot i have had are under 80 feet.

Right, let’s posts topics of ****heads killing other hunters but my gawd let’s not let a curse word through. Would hate for kids to see that kind of language but dead hunters, that’s ok. Ya, that makes perfect sense.

I agreed with your sentiment. Some guy (probably a father / husband with a family) shoots a buck, takes a pic over the buck and texts to his friends and then gets murdered by some idiot who can't be bothered to take the time to identify what he's shooting at. 5 years does not seem harsh enough.

Could you really not convey the same message without the use of curse words?
