This is really well planned on my part (sarcasm), seeing as I fly in two weeks. It looks like goats and hogs will be open in some units during my trip. Is it worth me toting the bow? Even if I just hike all day I would have fun. I have no desire to pay an outfitter, I'd go to Texas for that. Anyone familiar enough with Oahu to say take it or will I just be taking it for no reason?

First, go online and make sure you’re able to get your license which will require a hunters safety waiver (need to provide proof you’ve attended a course elsewhere).

There is only one option for goats in Oahu and the season isn’t open until February.

The hogs on Oahu live in thick jungle. Cool places to hike and explore and sure, it’s possible you might see a pig before it sees you.

PM me if you need a head start, bring your saddle and SRT gear if you want to hunt my feeder.

Thanks, everyone for the responses! I definitely should have taken my bow just to chase some hogs. But I had a great time either way. I might be convinced to go back.

Dang. I wasn’t on this forum when you asked. I lived and hunted in Hawaii. I can help if anyone else stumbles upon this and wants intel. Oahu can provide the physical break-off of mountain hunting with the added pleasure of tropical heat and the occasional biting centipede. Really fun, though. Big billies. Extreme terrain.

Extreme terrain, yes. Smallest billies in the state, by a long shot. Unfortunately the remaining goats are being shot out of helicopters. There are some left but I have a feeling this is just the beginning, arial gunning has destroyed hunting on the Big Island already.

Yeah I’ve heard that. I bet the “scientists” making those decisions would be removing people if they could get away with it. That’s probably phase II.

That said, I didn’t have trouble finding them in in Makaha last year. I did have trouble hitting them.

At PTA in 2019 I saw game numbers out there like I had never seen before. Of everything. Unbelievable. It was like being in a stocked preserve.

But then I hunted off PTA. Slim Pickens.

My hope is that government incompetence prevents their eradication efforts from succeeding.

awesome pictures! my wife and I are planning on going in 2022. I am hoping to get proficient enough with a recurve and bring a takedown with me

Come Kaua'i we get choke goats!

I am selfishly hoping that round trip flights stay where they are. I checked the other day and it was like 450!! If I'm tagged out before my winter break I'll be hard-pressed not to make another trip.

Bringing back an older thread.
I have a trip scheduled for the 22-28 of December.
Any options for hunting something then?
If not, any cool fishing or bow fishing trips to look into?

Depends on the island. If I remember I could have hog hunted and possibly the goats as well. I would recommend getting a snorkel setup and one of those rubber band frog gigs they have out there. I stayed on the west side of Oahu, an interesting area to put it lightly haha.

What island you going to? Each island has its own unique hunting opportunities.... Lanai is closed for hunting public until 2021 but For a price you could hunt axis deer on pulama’s private land. No one on Molokai will take you hunting because they don’t want any visitors right now and if you go there they probably will just throw deer poop at you the whole time. I’d say either Maui for hog and deer or Big island for hog, goat, and sheep. You could come Kauai where I live and get hogs and goats guarenteed, blacktails are out of the question as you will never see them unless you are deep in our backcountry (At least 4hr hike just going in to a good area if your in shape),

I’ll be in Oahu.
Any good places to look into for resources for that area?

Plenty pigs on the east side and along both sides of the ko’olau mountains. west and north have pig and goat. south has plenty bars and restaurants to hunt. Plenty guys run dogs for pig so I’d look for some archery only areas.
