Hawk Helium vs. Muddy Pros

Hardware update: the m4 cap screws I ordered have a small head diameter that actually sank into the bearing cover on the cam cleat. Issue solved by adding a washer under the head. A round button style head may be a better choice. There is no getting around clearance issues though, you have to offset the cam cleats and the sticks will only stack in a particular order. You could add a spacer under the suction cup button to increase the clearance enough so that it wouldn’t matter. I think I’m just going to leave them where they are for the time being. Still waiting on rope...

Great thread. I’m still waiting on my cut down helium to arrive and think you’re on to something.

Appreciate the detail, keep it coming.

Why is no one worried about the 300# limit on the cam cleats? I saw DIY’s video also and it looked fine but the tolerance feels way further out of spec than running Oplux thru a mad rock or some of the other mods I’m comfortable with.

And what kind of standoff is he using in the DIYHjnter one sticking video?

I’m not worried about the pound rating at all, I haven’t drawn a full free body diagram but the worst case loading would be assuming the standoffs are not supporting any of the load, and even then the load on the cam would the the tension in the rope which would worst case be your half your weight assuming there is enough friction supporting the rope on the back side of the tree not to mention all the angles involved. Long story short, I’d bet the cam should really only be supporting about 1/4 your weight in real life.

Update, rope came in. I’m running about 6 1/2’ which I based on where the wrap would end and still be sufficient for my typical tree size. I attached the rope through the button hole with a half hitch.

Nice! Lets see some tree action when you get a chance. Also, I would be wondering if the suction cups are valuable enough to make me want to put washers under them to get use out of that feature. If not worth using suction cups, why have them and just take them off? What do you think Rebel?
 
Put the sticks on a tree for comparison today. Took a video but I am going to modify the ropes by adding shock cord to make storing simple before I post a comparison video.

Added some shock cord to the end of the rope with some marine grade heat shrink (with adhesive). The length works out really nice, not a lot of wasted material here.

I think the suction cups are worth keeping so that they stack nice. Id make the effort to keep them, they are quiet and useful.

Ive got both, big time prefer the hawk heliums. I think they bite the tree better. Ive got custom aiders i built for each set up and get about 22-28 feet with either, just depending on spacing and if i stand on a stick to put my first stick up or not
 
Rebel_1125 - Any climbing yet? I got up on my cut down helium with harken cleat but felt a softness/stretch coming from the rope. Using 6 mm EWO. Likely my rope breaking in but didn’t know if you had same experience - new to sticking from WEI steps so maybe the sticks are just a bit more fluid?

Yes I got to get in a tree with them side by side with a versa strap. I didn’t notice any additional/excessive movement relative to the versa strap. Setup saves some margin of time but the savings will really show themselves in cold weather and trees where you can’t seem to find the right loop on the versa strap. Stowing time is the same with the shock cord I added on to my rope (6mm Sampson).

Using ¼ Amsteel worked like a charm. What harken is everyone using? This is the 150 that has a 300# working limit so comparable to commercial tree stands.

I’m going to play with re-installing the versa button and positioning the cam cleat to hold the tail so don’t think I’d need the larger cam cleat.

For the stick experts out there:
Where’s the best area on a stick for a versa button to be attached?

And I just ordered an artisan outdoors platform for the stick - would it create better stability if I mounted it on the bottom step instead of the top?

Nice!! I know the Harken micro is a lot shorter and would probably have room for the cups to fit normally but their weight limit is pretty low.

I used the micro, and like I said in a previous post, to load the cam with 300lbs would be impossible if it’s properly installed. I’ll see if I can make some time to draw a free body diagram to prove it.

Fair point. I think the micro will ultimately be the way to go but I started down the free body calculation path then figured for the extra $7 it’d be worth piece of mind to know I had tree stand level support.

And can you elaborate on what you mean by “if it’s properly installed”? Im new to all of this and want to make sure I’m not missing something obvious..

Is there an online calculator/hack you’ve found to estimate free body calcs? Even just a rough order of magnitude calculation to establish a ball park estimate?
