Myself, I always use a light. Early in my hunting career I never used a light but as I grew older it became apparent to me that by deploying a light, I could enter the woods quieter and leave less scent by being able to avoid touching limbs or weeds. Then there's the safety factor of a lighted entry. I don't think a light bothers deer at all.
In the past I always used a hand held light but this year I'm going to use a headlamp and will likely use a white light but will experiment with a red light as well.
