Been reading the site for quite a while searching, learning, gaining knowledge into saddle hunting. About ready to place my order for my first saddle with a Tethrd Phantom and all the fun stuff to go with it. Primarily hunt public land up here in the UP of Michigan. Looking forward to becoming more mobile and especially more light weight! Can't wait for the snow to melt and get out and practice in the new saddle once it arrives.

Good Luck From Ohio. I've Spent my Vacation at Munising every yr. since I was very little.

Welcome from Toledo, Ohio!
I rode my Road King across the UP last year doing a solo Lake Michigan circle tour...beautiful country up there

Thanks for the replies everyone! Just pulled the trigger and placed my order with Tethrd. Phantom on the way.

Welcome from Gladwin. I hunted bear in Crystal Falls for 8 years and really enjoyed God's country.

Greetings! I’m an experienced saddle hunter, but new to hunting public land in the UP. I just moved to Marquette 1.5 years ago. Any tips for finding good areas to hunt? Seems like a totally different game than down state. There’s little to no agricultural and hard to narrow down the vast woodlands.

Let me know if you need any tips on saddle setups and tree prep!

I loved my time in the UP. Had some great hunting there. I was born in Marquette but really grew in the north western side of the lower peninsula. I lived in the Houghton county area for quite a few years and have hunted a lot in the Crystal Falls area.

Hunting up there is just a much bigger version of what I hunted in growing up, large woodlots with little to no AG. I find it best to focus on obvious edges to cut down the size of the area. There's a lot of logging activity, try to focus around edges of the cuts and the resulting thick overgrowth. Also, the transitions to the lowland areas along rivers always produced well for me.

Yup, boyne bowhunter is right. I'm born and raised in the UP so I don't know anything else other than hunting whitetails up here. Google Earth is your friend. Look for timber cuts and the transitions from one type of forest to another. I'm also in Marquette, but I hunt multiple counties. Find oaks for early to mid-October and hunt the travel corridors to those. Look for beaver ponds and find the spots where they neck down and deer can cross. I do a lot of scouting in the spring when you can still see the buck activity from the year before too. And don't be afraid to move a lot. Some areas look great but in reality don't hold a lot of deer. PM me if you've got any questions on specific areas. I'm happy to help give some pointers. There's some dandy bucks up here, you just gotta put in the work and don't give up!
