(HELP) get body odor off hunting clothes

Yup been there.. I have a home made ozone closet like people suggested gear. I have use that here and there on my stench filled base layers but I don’t love the idea of destroying my stupidly expensive base layers. That’s why I was looking for a better solution. I should have mentioned that in my first post. I’ve ozoned it for 30 minutes and it still has an odor. Far less but as soon as I start to sweat in it again it comes back with vengeance.

I would be a careful if there are some ozone diehards out there not to ruin your clothes.

I'm a long time ozone user. The degradation of elastic and rubber that I've experienced has been pretty minimal. But I dont store clothes in an O3 environment long term. 20 min to a half hour treatment is enough to kill odors and then I either wear it or air it out and store it.
Be aware that O3 generators have a life. They don't continue to produce O3 forever. I just rebuilt one of my O3 units.

How do you know when one is dead, or on it's way out. Will it stop omitting the odor of ozone?

@BassBoysLLP is the resident O3 expert and it was he (I believe) that talked about O3 generators wearing out. He said that even though they still smell like O3, they won't be emitting is (or at least will emit at low levels??). Mine finally stopped having any O3 smell, so I knew by that time that it was bad. It may have been generating very low levels of O3 for a while before it totally konked-out.
Something else about O3 units...any that I ever owned had directions saying not to run for long periods of time without a "rest". I think it's something like 30 min run time max and then rest for 30 (?) minutes. Running for too long wears out the ozone cell.

May sound dumb but can you explain... like you do you dump the baking soda straight onto the laundry or put It in one of the detergent or fabric softener spots? Also how much baking soda?

First lite says to only wash in cold, but I feel like warm would definitely do a better job.

Anyone know what the risk is of washing Marino in hot instead of cold?

I wash my stuff by hand. I have a bucket, (cut off 55 gal plastic drum) get something like that and then just pour in a whole box and let them sit, an hour, a day, two days? After that just give em a wash and see if that works.

Does anyone know of any side effects that baking soda would have on clothes to soak them for that long? (besides possibly adding scratchiness to it)

Thanks y'all

There is nothing worse than the rank smell of someone who smoked in hunting clothes. I was given some clothing and man they rank from the smoker. II had to wash them 3 - 4 times in baking soda. than put them in a plastic bag and dumped more baking soda in the bag for a month. The ODOR is gone. That is how good it works.

Took some time but all it good now.

I had to use Dawn dish soap in some of my base layers because I used to use that cakey white unscented antiperspirant during hunting season. Soaking the armpits in the dawn broke the antiperspirant down and then I followed with the baking soda and ozone treatment. Nothing would get that crap out besides Dawn.

Not to morph the thread, but this might be a good time to mention deodorant because it may help prevent the OPs issue for him and other guys in the future.
I'm convinced the best unscented deodorant is Almay hypoallergenic. It's a gel that works great for me and a little spreads a long away on pits, feet, and anywhere else you apply it. In addition to the Almay, I also apply deodorant crystal, and a chunk of crystal will last for many years.
I'm trying to prevent any and all bacteria from forming. I figure the crystal may deal with a type of bacteria that the Almay may not address. I do know that the crystal works great, but it's only a deodorant, it's not an antiperspirant, so the crystal alone won't stop sweating. The Almay deals with sweating.
Everybody's body chemistry is different so this combination may not work as well for others but it works great for me.

I switched to Mitchum unscented gel and it doesnt leave a residue in clothes but I think it still has a little bit of scent. I'll have to look into the Almay for next season.

I have ozone closets and totes and this may sound dumb but just hang it outside for a few days. I like to do that first if my clothes are pretty bad. Im in PA also, it’s still cold at night now. A few nights in this cold will take the smell out.

Boy, I wish that Almay didn't have aluminum in it. Unfortunately that's a no no for me. Too bad. My choice of pit protection is either Primal Pit Paste or Lavilin. Some older studies have linked aluminum to some dementia like Alzheimer's. Please don't ask for links. It's been awhile.

Ive taken Scent Killer wash and rubbed it vigorously into the pits of my old FL Minaret T shirt and then let it sit there for an hour or so to soak in before washing it in the Nikwax Merino Wool Soap and that worked for me. That Minaret shirt sure does hold on to body odor though in the pits if i wear it multiple days.
