Help with saddle comfort

To th e OP, I'm right there with you. 1st year in the saddle and only 5 sits so far this season. My biggest issue is with my knees. I'm not a young guy and my knees are not great. I have used knee pads and then went to a foam pad (heater seat). I like the pad way better but don't like the bulk hauling it in. Even with the pad my knees take a beating against the tree. Oddly its better with the pad an no knee pads than with both. I like my tether lower (chin height) as it does not seem to get in the way of pulling back on my bow as much. Going to have to play around with that some more. Yesterday was opening day in NJ of fall bow and I sat morning and evening. My knees are not happy about that so I have some sorting out to do. My thighs are burning but that is just my lack of being in shape.

Backrest: I use a Phantom saddle with the Tethrd backrest. A few questions on that. Not thrilled about opening up my biner to attach it once I'm in the tree. Also the webbing is like a mile long so before I cut it any reason why? The webbibng is noisy on the biner when I shift around if thier is tension on it. I seem to need to tighten in when in more of a sitting position and lossen it when leaning. Is all this normal or am I missing anything here? Any advice from you seasoned saddle folks is most helpful.

I have bad knees too. I guess that is another reason I often use the Jx 3. No knees on the tree with the whale tail. I still use other saddles for short sits

I am new to saddles use a Phantom/Predator and I am 51, 6' and 185#. Do you just have steps or are you using a platform as well? I think the platform helps a lot with comfort. I had hip pinch at first as well. What worked for me was going full length on the bridge and raising my tether. I started out with it at forehead height and moved it up about 10" above my head. I use 2 squirrel steps about 90 deg. from either side of the platform. When I lean my ropeman is higher on my tether and when I sit I lower the ropeman until I am at a comfortable sitting height for my knees. I fell asleep yesterday sitting, so maybe I was too comfortable. I like to change my position from leaning to sitting to keep from getting stiff. I have 8 hunting sits so far and have not once wished I was back in a stand. OK maybe for a couple seconds on my first night descent using sticks and and a 5 step aider, I had a hard time finding the loops and the tree was on a little angle so it was a little bit of a challenge. I am better at it now. This is just what has worked for me in the short time I have been using a saddle.

I like the knee pad, too. I used to carry it as its own piece of gear. This year I’ve attached it to the bottom of my pack. Then, I hang my pack so the pad is right for my knees. It’s one less step.

Come to the light, the JX3 light..............
Don't be afraid, you will sit from dark to dark very comfortably, be able to snooze when you want, no dreaded hip pinch.
No platform required, only a ROS, no knee pads required, built in pack frame for carrying all your needs.

How is it packing the JX3 in? It would nice if they could come out with something lighter and smaller for guys under 200lbs. I was tryin to get away from anything over 5 lbs.

As many of the other JX3 disciples have opined, is that it rides very comfortably on your back and does not feel like the advertised weight 9.5 lb.s
I have used many other packs and the JX3 just rides so comfortably.

Just got a Tethrd Phantom and I am working through getting used to it. I have a ROS, but I am thinking that a platform will be more comfortable for me. I haven't decided which platform I want to go with, but I like the idea of having a couple steps behind the platform for moving. Any pros and cons of the Predator Platform vs. the OOAL Ridge Runner?
