Hickory Creek Koolaid

Not yet. Going w/ some different arras. Been unable to play with it. Are y'all shooting off hand or utilizing some sort of "shooting stick"? Couple years ago I was reasonably good out to 30 yrds. Came from shooting a longbow, but after a shoulder replacement I went to the Mini.

Wasn’t sure where else to go to ask… I’ve had my mini for about 3 years now. Since I’ve had it the arrows have always hit the target at an angle and not very consistent. I hadn’t shot it in over a year… missed all of last season with shoulder surgery. I’ve been out all afternoon trying to get it sighted in and it never hits the same place twice. I have it set to the maximum draw weight and I am shooting the arrows that come with it with 100 grain broad heads. I even tried field points and they are the same! I just have a cheap red dot scope on it. Everything is tight, so I wouldn’t think it would move around if everything is tight! I don’t know what else to do! I should mention that I have always had crossbows, so I don’t know anything about tuning a bow. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I only had one small issue with a cam leaning. I called Jerry at Huckory Creek and he was alot of help. I suggest you give him a call.

You could call Jerry, you could also shoot those arrows through paper and attempt to adjust the rest until they’re shooting straight. Nock high means move the rest up a little, and I’m preeeeettyy sure it’s the same as a compound where nock right means move the rest to the left (which is counterintuitive). And then of course vice versa if your nock is opposite of above.

+1 for reaching out to Jerry. I recently purchased a used mini from a member and had a concern about a serving coming undone at the Y on one cable. New to crossbows, 150lb draw weight had me concerned so was calling to order a new set to be safe. Jerry took a few minutes talk assess the problem, explain how it was nothing of concern and then talked me out of buying cables by just retying the serving. Even talked me through that. 5 shots later I was smashing x’s.

Neat little machine. I have had my eyes on one for a while. Area I hunt just legalized crossbows so finally took the jump. Liking it a lot so far. Will be looking forward to seeing if the hype is real in the woods.

I contacted Jerry and decided to just send it to him to tune it. I don’t know what I’m doing and I just want it set up right. I figure it’ll save me a lot of grief in the long run.

Once it is tuned properly, have any of you had to mess with it from time to time, or does it pretty much stay good until maybe replacing a string or something? Just curious if I will need to adjust it very often.

This video gives you the basics on cam timing and lean, just a FYI.

I do not see any markings on my cams. But looking at them closely i see I am a little out of time. Since I have no markings I do not know which one to adjust. I will be giving Jerry a call today.

Ah you know what, now I remember in 2023 I did adjust my limb tension on one side of the bow… can’t remember exactly what I did but it did fix my arrow flight.

I called Jerry.
This is how you check for cam lean. I had both cams leaning.

You squeeze the cable and limb here. With the bow uncocked.

With enough pressure you can put a small diameter screwdriver in the small round hole.

Then you can remove one side of the cable here and add 1 or 2 twists. I had to do it on both ends. No more cam lean.

I know it’s already been said many times, but Jerry is a super guy! I sent my bow to him to time and I talked to him and he has it stacking arrows. He’s sending back ready to go! I can’t say enough about how please I am!

That said, he said he videoed shooting it and was going to post the video. He said I can go to verticalcrossbow.com to login and see the video. I’ve been there many times. Can anyone help where you login on the site?

So I’m shooting a pretty heavy setup and finding quite a bit of drop when shooting at 30 yards in comparison to 20. I’m running around 300gr up front on 250 spine arrows. Wondering if a new string might fix some of the drop?

I am shooting the standard arrows with the 50gr insert and 175gr points. Total arrow weight is 450gr. I do not notice a big drop between 20 and 30. I am about 2" high at 20.

Quantify quite a bit of drop? Broad heads or field points? Are you shooting max draw weight?
Is the string in good shape and bow tuned to specs?

Can’t speak specifically to the mini but know enough about vertical bow tuning to be doubtful a string change will be the answer if it’s in spec.

I do know that when I’m running super heavy arrows my pin gaps open way up.

This is sort of what I was figuring too, but thought it may be worth the question. I’m shooing max draw weight, both field points and broadheads, and the bow is in spec. I’ve tried out a few different arrow/broadhead setups and they seem to fly different. Sweet spot seems to be the 300 vs the 250, but I’m unsure on how that’ll look paper tuned.

The bow performs pretty close to a down the middle 70/30 compound in terms of speed/energy.

What I mean is, it shoots a 450gr arrow the same speed as my 70/30 bow from 10 years ago.

That’s something like 280fps, if I recall correctly.

I shoot 125gr heads and either 50 or 75gr inserts.

This lets me shoot red dot sight 0-30 point of aim, +- 3”.

This is the hole for the screwdriver mentioned in post 1552. More pressure would be required to move hole to top of limb.
