Hickory Creek Koolaid

Why did you mount the red dot all the way back like that, just out of curiosity?

I guess I don’t have to. But I built an extension for my mini stock, so for me, that’s about normal for someone else. I tried it there and it was fine. I may try moving it forward.

I am interested in using the same red dot sight. Are you using a 2” riser mount like used for an AR to raise the sight? Would it be too low to see through without the riser mount?

Reading through this thread, I see that some people like the Hickory and a few do not. I am considering getting one of these, but my question is what is the downside, or reasons some do not care for it???

High taxidermy and processor bills or lots of time spent doing all this yourself.
They have some quirks to work through. It's a two piece take down system that has some wobble. There's a threaded stud that accepts a nut that will correct the wobble, you just buy a nut at the hardware store. You can't cock the bow with the stock quiver/mount on. You take off the quiver, cock and re-attach the quiver. The stock scope sucks in low light.
Those are the issues I've had with mine but other than that it shoulders really well, lightweight and is great for hunting out of the saddle or on the ground. I also like shooting arrows not bolts and being able to work on my own stuff so it fits all of those options for me.
I'll add there are plenty of cheaper options that'll shoot faster and more accurate right out of the box so it's all in what you're looking for.

Downsides (or differences) compared to other crossbows is what I assume you're looking for?

- Speed - with the stock arrows, you're topping out at 330fps with a really light arrow setup. The proper way to define this is energy. Think of it this way - the mini is equivalent to a 70/30 down the middle IBO compound in terms of energy output from the power stroke. How do I know this? It fires the same weight arrow as my compound with -+5fps - at any weight up to 600 grains.

- Vertical versus horizontal orientation - Pros and cons here are in the eye of the beholder. But it's tiny, so not sure it really matters.

- Most crossbows give you a single "fiddle point" - you choose your broadheads. Most everything else is fixed. WIth the mini - you're really shooting a compound bow with a drawloc. You have some options for adjustment and customization you don't with crossbows. Again, pro or con depending on your perspective.

As far as pure downsides related to specific users, I have a couple. These are absolute - as in not compared to other crossbows. I have no desire to own any other crossbow.

- I can't really find a good way to tote the thing around for quick deployment on shot opportunities. This is a me problem for sure. But the ease of packing it on my pack and stand setups is really nice.

- Because there is so much room for me to tinker, I have a small increase in my anxiety level in the background of every hunt. I'm worried about bolts being tight, and assembly being done correctly. This is also a me problem because i can't help but tinker. If you bought the bow, and loctited everything, you'd never worry.

It is a very effective tool. Odds are you won't be dissapointed.

A very few do not. Downside is replacing all the damaged arrows from shooting @ the same spot.

Thanks for the reply. I have a Koda bow now with a limb issue. Not sure how serious it is. Looks like a crack to me?? I dont see any other cross bows that are simple. Not looking for anything above 300fps. Only consern with a Hickory is parts down the road. Kinda stuck with the Kota since they are out of business and no warraty.

Most of the complaints I have seen from people not satisfied with it relate to accuracy. I've killed 6 deer and a hog with mine just this year and lord knows how many other critters. If you lock the riser to the stock with a nylon nut and lock washer, I have not found accuracy to be an issue. I also rarely shoot the mini unless it is killing critters, so this year it's been shot 8 times (missed a 2nd hog). I suppose it's possible that extended range sessions may result in a need to adjust/tighten something. But Jerry (owner) has videos shooting across a pond at like 150 yards. It's definitely capable of accuracy. I personally only need deer-killing accuracy out to 30 yards, so I may be more forgiving of any flaws the mini has. At this point it's possible I've killed more deer with the mini than without even if you count my .30-06.

I like those Koda bows, I checked them out. Resembles an AR-15 lower and if they came apart as easy and held zero that would be great. They're out of business? I was just messing around and able to add items to my cart online....

I just purchased a dozen Bloodsport Punishers off Camofire. Was a deal too good to pass up. Anyways, they came fletched, full length and with 50 grain brass inserts but the inserts aren’t threaded through and I’d like to add maybe another 100 grains to them. Any suggestions? I contacted DCA and asked if their 50 grain brass inserts are threaded through and they said they are not. But others here had mentioned that they are. I already ordered the 25 grain weights from EBay and had planned on just slipping them on the back of inserts. Is it possible to run a self tapping hole threader through so I can add more weight? Or would I lose too much weight drilling it out? I know I can just buy 150 grain inserts but I’d like to have some adjustability. Or just go with Ethics system but that’s $60ish for 12. Best case scenario for me would be to run a tap through the inserts I have and add weight accordingly from the backside but I wasn’t sure if it was possible. Or if anyone knows where I can find threaded through 50 grain brass inserts in .244 ID that would be even better. Thanks, Matt

Downsides are pretty much covered. I've killed 6 deer over 2 seasons now with this bow and have not had to do a single thing to it. I did loctite literally every screw though.

What I like the most about this thing is how easy it is to work on yourself with no special tools at all. I had a friend try to cock it and accidentally pop the string off. No problem- just loosen tension and reroute string. Can't do this with any other xbow. I went ahead and ordered extra strings and an extra arrow rest from Jerry as I see those as the only parts that will eventually wear out. Everything else should pretty much last my lifetime if I take care of it.

Aside: sometimes I am temped to buy one of those new high powered xbow (my hunting buddy has one that shoots 470 fps!!) but literally every time I am in my local archery shop getting arrows or something, I see multiple people come in with busted xbow's for him to work on. He is so backed up that a lot of folks will miss their archery season because of it. And when I see my buddy hitting the bullseye at 80 yards, I just force myself to remember, I can't see further than 30 yards during archery season anyway!

I ordered 2 different packs of 50 grain inserts for the same reason. Every insert weighed exactly 50 grains and these ones were threaded through

This nutterbuster guy is starting to get expensive. First he does a vidio on a Recon saddle, so I got one.
Then he does a vidio on a Pac Seat and I got one of those.
Then he does a vidio on the Hickory Creek and I just ordered one.
Nutterbuster, please no more vidios on this cool gear until 2023!

Anyone have the Trophy Ridge Hex light quiver on their Mini?
