Hickory Creek Koolaid

Is anyone shooting 125 grain broadheads? And if so, do you know how fast the stock arrows go with the limbs tightened all the way down? I don't have a chronograph to get a measurement. Having a few issues getting the speed dial on my Hawke and the yardage markers to work.

Thinking I should zero at 25 maybe and call it good. I highly doubt I'll shoot anything past 30.

I might be a little foggy on my info but did you make sure the scope is closest to center shot without hitting the string on the scope? I had issues until I moved the scope around as close as I could without interference. Once I had the scope moved, I had plenty of adjustment for elevation adjustment which is really all you're dealing with the yardage marks. Then treat the speed dial as a reference for adjustment just like your turret adjustment and not as an actual speed in fps. I hope that makes sense.

I shoot the grim reaper 125gr micro hybrid. I don't shoot past 40 yards, no matter what. I am sighted in at 20 yards and really don't see any difference in POI from the deer I shot at 7 yards and the deer I have shot at 35 yards. Basically, not enough difference to adjust my scope or crosshair placement. I have also put 200grain field points on and haven't seen a difference in POI out to 35 yards.

I tried them, just because that's what I've always shot with my compound, but I couldn't get a good paper tear. Tried taking weight off, leaning cams, moving the rest, etc. Maybe it really doesn't matter.

Ended up rolling back to 100s and ordering some Sevr 1.5s which, no surprise, fly real consistent.

I'm already cheating by hunting with a crossbow, may as well not do all the extra work tuning arrahs! :tearsofjoy:

Agree, shot 2 8 pts last season with a bloodsport 125gr cut on contact. One @ 17 yd, other @ 29. Sighted at 20 yd, I use a vortex illuminated spitfire so I can shoot with 2 eyes open, 500gr+. Caught the shoulder one, still a pass through. Slow, 286fps, but shattered the off leg ball socket & kept going. Broadhead was toast.

What is your arrow set up to get 500gr?
My stock 300 spine are 377gr with a 100 broadhead.
I want to get a heavier broadhead but not sure how much weight I can add with the 300's.

See post 921. My brass inserts were threaded all the way through, others have indicated theirs were not.

I think the scope is really close to the string. Maybe 1/8" gap.
I was dead on at 20 with a 125 single bevel (Alien Archery V2), but when I moved back to 30, using a speed of about 300 fps on the Hawke, the arrow was about 6-7" low. I didn't dare shoot at 40 yards as I was sure I would lose an arrow. Maybe I was flinching. I'll have to get a better rest to make sure.

I guess my arrow weight is about 400 if a stock 300 spine is 377 with 100 grain broadhead.

Guess I'll try estimate the speed using the amount of drop between 40 and 20 yards on the target to see if I can work out the kinks on the Hawke scope.

Did you adjust your scope between shots??? A 6-7" drop in 10 yards sounds extreme. I can shoot 100, 125, and 200 grain heads at 30 yards and the POC is within a inch.

Ok, so the plot thickens....
Got some 125 grain field points so I could actually match apples to apples hopefully to my broadhead which is 125 grain.
Did my best to measure my arrow setup and I'm confident it's around 395/400 grains.
Scope is Hawke XB-1 (1-5x32), 20 yard hashtag is first line. No reason to believe it's been dropped or damaged in any way.

Long story short I finally was able to get yardage marks to work when I dialed it down to 265 fps. Which to me is super slow for that setup but it worked. 20 yards was dead nuts on, 40 yard hash mark was very close (as close as I could hold it steady).

So, just for grins and giggles I measured the amount of drop using the same 20 yard marker at 40 yards. The amount of drop was ~13.75". Which according to the website below puts my arrow at ~ 320 fps, which is much more believable to me.

I don't know what to think anymore. But I do know that with the speed indicator at the 265 fps, the yardage hash marks finally work. I didn't check at 50 yards as I was soaking wet from the humidity and it was getting dark.

Just a quick update on my XB1 saga..

I shot both field point and broadhead out to 50 yards and both were pretty much on with the speed ring set at 265 fps, for all ranges 20, 30, 40, & 50. I highly doubt the arrow is going that slow, but for some reason that's where it works for my setup.

Now to get comfortable shooting from my saddle.

Getting ready to do an arrow build for my HC Mini. For those of you that have added extra weight up front, what have your findings been? Tunability? Accuracy? Quietness? And what spines have worked with what tip weight combinations? I purchased a dozen Bloodsport Punishers in 300 spine. I had planned on using 125 grain heads + 150 grain in inserts(50+100). With everything should get me around 525 grains give or take. Feels like a nice compromise for speed and penetration at least on paper. And I was looking for some advice on those who already own a HC Mini and what you like to shoot. Thank you in advice. All comments are appreciated

Would love to hear how that shoots for you. The farthest I’ve gone is 300 spine micros from Black Eagle with 150 grain Magnus heads. They shoot amazingly accurate out to 40 and have penetrated 10 deer now.
