Hickory Creek Koolaid

i picked it up from the classifieds here from @Jimmyfunk60 (thanks again, great seller/fast communication, shipping etc, good guy but you all knew that already i think) so all ugrades at this point are his/ the way he bought it. I'm looking forward to a few additional tweaks and such and have lots of reading to catch up on. i reassembled it with a lock nut (sent with) on the front (and set screw instead of the hand screw, i think that was right?) but plan on giving it a thorough going through before i try to shoot it/ don't really care about the take down ability. will have to figure out the neoprene washer situation and any other setup tweaks, teach myself how to get used this sight, coming from an EZ-V on my compound where i dont really even range deer, it's a bit of a different system lol. who knows, maybe i'll love it, maybe i'll take it off and trade it to someone for a red dot, playing with it is going to be half the fun. first things first a good case, i heard double tennis racket cases may work, but that's the first accessory needed.

Thanks for the kind words. These bows are killing machines… that scope set up is cool but the red dot is the way to go… that’s the set up I kept.. play around with that scope but u def could sell it and the HHA and get a top quality red dot.

This little thing IS fun. I didn't have time to sight in fully but shot a few and am liking it more and more. Not the best shot example (I was shooting at lower left dot, pulled that one wide at 40 yards, pretty happy with this level of accuracy after a dozen shots on day 1) but sharing the photo because of what's standing about 70 yards behind the targets... They know where they are safe lol. Screenshot_20221114-161333.png

To be honest, I understand a little bit more of the hating on crossbows and will likely not argue as much as I used to about them (however I've always been in the follow the regs and shoot what's legal, stop telling other people what to do camp). They are pretty simple, efficient killing machines and fun, but you all have been drinking the Kool aid for a while, I feel like someone should say "you always remember your first glass" lol.

Off topic, I ran into a guy shooting a cool old PSE compound that is a new saddle hunter, should have mentioned the site but forgot, shared one of my hunting spots instead lol. Anyhow, doubt he's on here but if you are I'd be happy to trade more Intel.

Full disclosure I broke an arrow and ruined a nock by being careless and shooting low before it was sighted in ok so there is somewhat of a newbie learning curve to these things, but I feel like with a bit more practice it's ready for the woods much faster than the compound. Then I can focus on trad in the off-season, but that's a whole different thread/forum section entirely. @Nutterbuster you reccomended a site for arrow ordering in one of your YouTube videos where you talked about your blue vanes, but after remembering all the secondary details I'm blanking on the store name, can you remind me where that was please?

Otherwise I screwed on some 125 tips today to keep things the same as my compound and plan on building some arrows with QAD exodus heads and lighted nocks unless there's reasons to not use either on this thing.

Sighting in an actual sight will be a new experience as well, so time to research a bit on that as well.

And I also have a few pages to re-read in this thread now first. Still working on reading, but as far as I can tell there's no good cases for these things (assembled)? Looks like the tennis racket and gun cases fit the taken down bow but nothing assembled. Hopefully I discover one in the next few dozen pages but otherwise I may be building a plybox bow case soon

The latest mini saga, pun intended...

I have a dilemma. I borrowed my buddys crossbow today to let my 9 year old daughter shoot. She did great! So, I’ll have to get a crossbow for her this next season. Now, there are times where I wish I had a crossbow during deer season and even turkey season where it’s bow only. The dilemma is that I’m a lefty and everyone else is wrong. . So, would it just make better sense to get a tradition crossbow as opposed to a vertical crossbow since these are specific to left and wrong handed?

Yes. Most typical xbows are "ambidextrous". The mini is not.

I have been trying to read back through the thread to find the preferred red dot sight you all are using, but am failing to find anything other than the fastfire 3 (with some chatter about the dot being too bright?). There's a different one on camofire today for a pretty good discount, any opinions about how this would work? https://www.camofire.com/index.php/Deals/57 I am completely ignorant to scopes if it's not obvious. Crimson trace CTS-1300 for $120. It appears to have 8 brightness settings.

I have no experience with it on the mini, but the AT3 Tactical ARO on anazon is great for the money. I own 3. One on a 410 turkey killer, one on my 28 gauge O/U for turkeys, and the last on a little savage 22lr bolt gun.

I know there has been a lot said about Quiver mods already but I have been working with a Trophy Ridge and could not get it to where I could string the mini. I cut the plastic rods down and shortened the length of the Quiver and just like magic, it works. Good hand clearance...my hand was hitting the Quiver when I would put my finger on the trigger...no more. Also good clearance for the boot for stringing.

Well I got everything sorted out with my bumped scope, turns out either it wasn't level when I checked , or it got bumped since I leveled, but the whole rail was crooked. Unfortunately after doing that I was hurrying to sight it in and pulled the string off the cams. No major damage to me or the bow it seems, but what now, visual inspection, turn out the limb bolts and reassemble? I remember a story of someone saying they field-strung the bow after a friend did this at deer camp, likely @Nutterbuster ? Or do I need a new string? Ugh newbie growing pains lol.

Crank limb bolts out till enoug slack ti string the bow. This is how you change the string.

If the string isn’t damaged visibly it’s fine. If you see any cut strands replace it. Buy spare string anyway

Although my modification is working for me I am not liking it. I might need to make a bracket like the one for the Kwikee Kwiver to move it to the left a little while I’m cocking it. The arrows are hitting me in the stomach when I bend over to cock it. I wish someone would KK bracket copy

Is anyone using ethics inserts with their mini? Fell down a YT wormhole this morning and wondered "hey do I need this????"

Mini arrived yesterday and I’m pumped. The Ramcats I use don’t fit in the quiver… I did scroll through as many pages as I have time for but can anyone recommend a good flying fixed head that fits the quiver and is actually
possible to pull out of a target? I’d probably go with QAD Exodus swept but I’m afraid they’ll never come out. If I go mechanical is a compound mechanical, or a crossbow mechanical, better? Or does it matter? Thanks!
