Hickory Creek Koolaid

Well I’m happy. I paper tune 300 spine arrow with 100gn insert and 150 gn field tip and received 3 bullet holes in a row.

Total arrow weight is .505 gns

Swapped out the scope today to a Hawke XB1 the speed adjuster is set at about 325-330 I was only able to sight and test it out to 30 yards but the first crosshair is right on at 10 and 20 yards and second crosshair is right on at 30 yards, same hole shots. When some more snow banks recede I can get farther from the target, I'll be happy if the 40 yard pin follows suit.

I have the fixed power, have not installed it, I was concerned about string clearence.
Did you have any issues?
Did you remove you string silencers?

I didn't notice anything hitting but I moved the string silencers so they are about 3/4 inch from the cams. The top silencer is close to the illumination adjuster when shooting, more shooting will decide if it needs to be removed. I may replace them with whisker string silencers like I have on the Mathews. I turned the scope caps so they open to the right, away from the string.

I ended up taking off the top string silencer because it was hitting the scope. I also put limb silencers and they dampened it lot.

I used Limbsaver Twist Lox. I didn't think they would fit in but I pushed them up and twisted them and they work!
I'm a happy guy!

I've got to say I really like this Xbow. I have a Horton Storm and it weighs four pounds more than the mini. I couldn't get my coc broad heads to fly with my field points or I should say I didn't know how to get them to fly together so I had to use flappers. I know I can get the cutthroats to fly with the field points with the mini!

Has anyone tried anything higher than 500 grains? Like the magical 650 grains? Sure you’d have go with a lower spine then the standard 300. Maybe a 250 spine with a 200 grain single bevel head. I was all set up with my 500 grain setup and thinking about switching to a Magnus Black Hornet Ser-Razor and calling it a day. But really intrigued about a 650 grain single bevel setup but don’t know if that’s possible with such a short arrow and high poundage. Of course I could just try it and report my results but was curious if anyone went that road yet. Thanks again fellow saddle hunters! Matt

A louder bow with too slow an arrow would bug me a little, wonder if that’s a recipe for issues at 30 yards, who knows.

Well it definitely wouldn’t be louder. I’m thinking about off angle shots or when the unexpected happens like hitting a branch or the deer changing the angle

Nothing magical other than when you encounter heavy bone like the humerus head on an adult whitetail. Like when Warb sheared it clean off and sent it into the boiler room on a shot that would’ve failed in most situations

The mini has the same energy as a modern compound shooting 70/30. I know this because it shoots within 5fps of my last bow with any arrow weight I’d want to shoot. Between those two bows I’ve put 490-525gr cut on contact arrows through shoulder bones and leg bones annd ribs and spines and recovered deer.

225gr up front/500ish gr shoots great and is quieter out of the mini. Something like 280-290fps if I recall correctly.

I do it with 250 spine but 300 shot fine too. Wear goggles and long sleeves and shoot from the hip on first shot if you’re going to try new heavy combinations on carbon arrows outside published guidelines.

I'm getting perfect arrow flight with 735 grains. I hadn't planned on going that heavy, or with a spine that stiff, but I'm bareshafting bullet holes with 735 and getting tears with everything else. Actually building my hunting arrows has been a much slower process than I had planned on but I should have a six-pack ready to go by the time the snow melts. 3 with Grizzly Kodiaks and 3 with Grizzlystick Samurais. Plus a couple of field points.

Oops to clarify, just the mini or any crossbow being a relatively louder bow, but yeah adding weight of course shaved some dBs.

What spine are you shooting?
