Only thing I ever aim at (hunting wise) has been whitetails. But I see EVERYONE mention that they always have a spare judo point arrow in their quiver, incase a small game appears. I tell my son all the time, as hunter we must respect what we shoot, so never take a shot at anything unless you plan to eat it.

HOWEVER....there been many times that I found the local squirrels very annoying and distracting when I'm in the tree, especially those that seem like they are trying to crunch as many leaves as they can! More then a few times I consider taking them out, but so far have resisted.

But who among us have gave in to the temptation and enjoyed the peace and quiet?

Late season ‘22 I was up a tree near a river, squirrel came up a tree next to me, gave a few chirps but nothing annoying. Squirrel laid down on a branch for 10 minutes and just watched the river - kind of a sit on the front porch - then went into its hollow tree hole. We shared an evening it was pretty cool, did not draw on this little buddy.

I've shot at two but missed both. Forgot to go retrieve the arrow on the second one of them (doh!) So decided to stop lol.

I have, but at the same time I don't now. Having other sets of eyes in the woods is good if they aren't looking at you. If they are looking at me, then the deer would have definitely seen me. The squirrels will see and hear things you won't, so learn to watch them and interpret what they are doing.

1 racoon, 2 woodchucks, and a coyote have been removed from wrong place wrong time.
Squirrels don't seem to bother me crashing around. May have put the cross hairs on a few for practice. But never pulled the trigger while deer hunting.

Question got me to thinking. Definitely yes on the skwerls. Also have bow shot from a tree, possums, coons, pigs, deer, at turkeys and bobcats lol, coyotes, rabbits and armadillos but I aint eatin possum.

When it comes to nest/fawn predators they don't last if they're within bow range. Coon, skunk, possum, yote, bobcats. Most get a regular broadhead except for coons. You pin em to the ground and they'll break an arrow every time. Hitting a bobcat properly with a bow is a feat in itself.

Squirrels don't bother me at all.

I wonder what possum tastes like. After getting hooked on beaver meat i dont shy away from trying anything. Beaver is probably my favorite meat.

squirrel isnt bad. I like having them around to let me know the same things others have said. or i'd eat them all.

I shot possum one day and I couldn't find a single recipe/ method anything about eating them. Only that you can people did/do eat them. Ended up not trying it but I'd be interested if anyone has an idea how to cook one

I figure it taste like Dapper Dan. As far back as I can remember I have heard people say skwerls and blue jays would alert them to deer coming. Not a single time in 40+ years of bowhunting has that happened for me. I have seen skwerls loose their mind and alert me to other stuff like hawks, owls, bobcats and this one black skwerl had a full blown breakdown over a swamp rabbit. Never deer though, they just dont seem to pay them any mind where I hunt. Would like to see that happen just once.

THey could care less about each other. (deer and squirrels). i mainly meant recognizing me in the tree. and also when i start hearing squirrels moving in the a.m. its usually deer:30 and i keep my head on a swivel. In the same context...I dont think deer really care about foxes either. Ive seen em chillin right next to each other like a disney movie. Only bears and humans spook deer where i have hunted. Im sure coyotes too if theyre thick but my areas dont have them too bad. animals learn real quick what the bad guy looks like and steer clear. THats why urban corn pile hunting is a joke to me.

If its a turkey hunting property, anything that eats eggs is a target

Youd figure beaver taste like dapper dan too but dagggggggon boy. That craps on every venison backstrap ive ever tried. including sika and elk.

Amen! Beaver to me is like really good beef! I've served it a couple times at my work, including the tail, and engineers 95% think its beef stew!

Oh and the tail was always guessed as "an unheard of fish"! No joke!

The backstraps are so friggin good man. I would switch out every venison backstrap with beaver if someone offered. I dunno if i just got some good beaver out of clean water or what but dannnnng. Theres a stinky beavver joke in there somewherre i think...
Ive had muskrat too but it was deep fried and i dont like most meat deep fried cuz of all the grease.

They must not soak up pond scum flavor like a snapper does.

I've never shot at a squirrel while deer hunting. I know if I did it would be the time when I hit it, and while congratulating myself on the shot I would look over and see a 140" buck bound off. I did give an armadillo a shower from the tree last season, lol. If I'm deer hunting, I'm not going to take shots at other things and have my arrows scattered around the woods to spook deer.

Squirrels don't bother me much and seeing them around gives me confidence that I am likely in a good spot. It's those tiny little birds that fly in, perch 10 feet from me and chirp a high-pitched alarm call for ten minutes that give me fits.
