Hot meal while in the Saddle

If you're going to cook food, why not just climb down and do it on the ground and then climb back up? I just bring a thermos with soup (chicken and stars is the most drinkable non-bisqye soup I've found so far) or broth. I typically use an rtic screw top bottle and burn my mouth regularly in the tree not waiting for it to cool down 6+ hrs after filling it.
Yeah you are probably going to need to use the bathroom also after you breakfast, lunch and dinner…I thinks it’s a terrible idea and you are probably going to dumping boiling water on yourself.

Sounds like a good way to kill yourself. Accidentally burn that tether or bridge and you are gone.

Honestly just bring a thermos full of something hot.

I will keep everyone updated on how things work out. I've rock climbed for many years as well as worked in the commercial construction industry as a Concrete Form Carpenter on high rise buildings. There have been a lot of things done, I didn't think was possible until we tried it and gave it some tinkering.

~ Keep your stick on the ice!

Anyone found or used a small shelf attached to the tree to run a backpacking stove to boil water? I have an MSR stove and a Jetboil and was looking for something to set the stove on to boil water to make a hot meal on the long cold days. I know HME makes a small shelf but it is a screw in and looking for something that isnt a screw in. I have a JX3 Hybrid as well as a Tethrd Saddle and would like to be able to just have a small place to set coffee mug, boil water, calls, whatever.
Jetboil attachment for big wall climbing
Thanks!

Doubt I’d do it, but I have a WES Perch as a back up platform that you could take and set up waist high on the side of the tree. That would make a great platform to cook off of.

I was going to say the same thing. Why not just climb down. Eat and go back up. Not worth all the messing around in the tree. IMO

I've brought a thermos full of hot broth or soup before. Very nice to have on a cold day. I've also used alcohol stoves to boil water, and to heat a blind.

My $.02 is, if you want something hot in a saddle, bring it in a thermos. If you want to cook, do it on the ground or in a blind. The risk of melting your tether with your cooking device is low, but higher than zero for me to personally be comfortable with.

Agree with what others have said here. I get what you're trying to accomplish but if you're going to boil water or heat anything do it from the ground. Good to get things limbered up and the circulation flowing after a long morning sit anyway.

It's probably been some 25yrs ago but I used to hunt NY hard for week long periods at time. Being out in the woods~3hrs from home I was basically living out my full size Chevy truck with a cap on the back of it but enjoyed hot meals every day. Would bring a couple collapsible Reliance Fold-A-Carrier 5gal water containers, and a cooler full of frozen Seal-A-Meals pre-made/cooked ahead of time and small Coleman propane stove. Boil water in a pot toss seal a meal in and a nice hot meal of whatever you desire in just a few mins. I.E.- A portion of steak, corn, mash pototatoes, vacuum sealed in separate sections of one vacuum sealed meal pack.

For late season on smaller scale you could do the same with a Jet-Boil and frozen vacuum sealed meal carried in your pack with a Thermos of water. Any cooking/cooked food smell is contained to the vacuum packs while heating until you cut it open with your knife or scissors to eat it. Bring an empty zip lock bag for the spent vacuum seal pack after you eat it.

While on the ground be sure to give yourself a few extra minutes more to make room for that hot meal after it warms up your insides.

All this makes for better/easier long afternoon sits.

I went into the back country this year and played around with a few meals. These tasted pretty good and imo would be a lot better than using your jetboil

Only tried 2 of them but they were good just didn’t use them often bc it was me and my father and these were single portions

all you do is add water and there is a chemical reaction that causes heat and steam (it gets very hot while it’s happening you wouldn’t want to be holding it). Your food is in a separate sealed bag inside so it’s not getting the chemicals

that's pretty neat and cheaper than I expected. Seems silly that they include a utensil in the pouch though. If they are catering to backpackers I think most would carry a reusable utensil.

I might order a few to try.

It makes sense. They're re-sealable, so you'd be able to field-strip unwanted items like silverware and napkins out, or add things like handi-wipes or TP. I think the ultralight crowd - the guys who clip the handles off their toothbrushes to save weight - probably won't go for this, but tossing one in the bottom of your pack or a few under the seat of your truck, seams like a prudent precaution against being stranded and uncomfortable.

I've done this with my Jetboil and it works great. I no longer sit dark to dark anymore so I make all my food on the ground these days.

Stand on my EDP and cook off the Perch. Also utilized this in flooded timber

Anyone have input on ultralight thermos? I was going through google.

I realized my last hunt of the year how dumb I've been to bring regular water in when really cold and then put really cold water in my core.

Never used one, but I figure cold-weather gear is heavy enough that weight is just the price of access.

Ever use a ghillie kettle? Basically a wood-fired Jetboil. Different manufacturers, this is the one I have:

I bought it with the idea of bringing it hunting in the late season, but never used it for that purpose. I love it on canoe trips, though.

Thinking about it, it would be pretty easy to stand on the lower platform on my OOAL Big Bob and cook off the top platform with the jet boil…
(Still doubt I’d do, but it’s an option)

cooking in a stand....what happens when the buck of a lifetime comes out and you get fumbly and either scald yourself or melt your rope?
