How do you carry your side arm while saddle hunting?

Appendix carry as I usually do. Once up the tree, I often remove it and set it in my pack until climbing down and walking back out. I mostly carry because I don’t trust two legged critters… I’ve had two encounters in ten years where some folks were being sketchy and seemed as if they were on drugs or drinking…but, it’s for bears and such as well.

I had the same experience coming out of a woods at dark many years ago before carry was legal, I bluffed my way out of that, after that I would never step into the woods unarmed, never. I also carry pepper spray.

I guess some think its easy pickings with just 1 truck on side of road or in parking lot, knowing they're alone and only a bow ?

Better safe than sorry.

Appendix carry here as well, but I keep it on me and concealed no matter what I'm doing.

The situation doesn't matter. When I'm out of bed and out of the shower - it's there.

Reloads are in my pocket in a pocket holster.

I think concealment is a top priority.

That's my take as well.

But in times of 'chaos', I'm ready to strap on the Duty Belt and Level 3, Low Ride Safariland holster and two reloads on the opposite side.
This work well with my 16" AR slung in front.

My AR pistol rides to the side and doesn't get in the way of what's situated at the appendix.

None of us want to ever use these tools on 4 or 2 legged predators, but by God I'll be prepared.

I'm in "bear country" in PA but they're only black bears. They're more a nuisance like a raccoon than anything. I do carry every hunt though, for the two legged variety of weirdo's that you never know if you'll run across these days. Several years ago, I had a friend who went to a spot to hunt in the morning. Walking in the dark, almost a mile back an old logging road, he came across some guy, no flash light, not hunting, half dressed. Was a really strange encounter.

I carry my sidearm on my pack, on the right side and within easy enough reach.

I just got this in yesterday. I thought about one of the kydex options, but being a lefty, my choice was limited and out of stock for my woods pistol. I thought this would carry alot heavier on this chest harness, but it doesn't feel like it adds much, to my surprise.

Unfortunately a couple of the draw hunts that I go on are on DOE property, so im prohibited from carrying. I guess if I encounter a bear there, which is very possible, I'll have to rely on my hand to hand combat skills.

I wish KUIU would make a handgun attachment like the Marsupial. I've asked many times and they continue to say no, that they don't see a need and that most users do not want to carry in that fashion.

Then WHY am I asking you?! Duh!

If that works for you, great.

When I look at that setup I see ten pounds of slop and sweat wagging back and forth. Ugh.

I can respect that! The bino harness was an adjustment. First hunt i wore it on where I had a bunch of hiking and big steep hills to climb, I took it off halfway. I will say it feels much better when I have it clipped onto my pack straps instead of the stand alone harness.

It may be that way again once I get it out there. I haven't field tested it yet. Only living room tested lol.

When I did, it was in my back pocket. I don't carry anymore. Just more bulk on the hunt I don't need.

And I'm inundated with bears. Black bears are the biggest wimps and wussies in the woods. Nothing to fear.
Two black bear deaths here in Arkansas in the last month. They are wussies until they ain’t anymore. I’ll put up with the bulk of a pistol if it means my kids still have their daddy.

To the OP, I have and use the marsupial Bino harness with bottom mounted holster, or a Striver streamline harness with a Venandi Bino holster underneath. I also own a Kenai, I don’t like the extra straps.

If you remove your harness to field dress then the Striver. Otherwise the Marsupial kit is my preference.

I got set up in the woods an hour before first light this morning. I heard a bear growl and walking the hillside toward me while I was up the tree. I didn’t have my pistol and was contemplating my options.

He walked past me and it reminded me I should probably bring it. Normally they run the opposite direction… this one sounded angry.

I’m carrying my Hellcat Pro in a kydex belt holster, with Molle clips from Amazon on my saddle. Suspenders definitely help.

Just curious of where you get the "wagging back and forth" from. The bino harness & handgun stay pretty well glued to your chest. Unless you have it way lose, there isn't any movement.

My guess is you don't have any experience with a bino harness?

I have experience with a bino harness. Yes. Two of them. Sold them each after a couple of sits. Clearly was not for me. Got in the way of the bridge. Bending over was a chore. Hiking with it on was not good as it would move all around and get sweaty. Felt like there was a refrigerator on my chest. The only thing it was good for was keeping the binoculars clean and debris free. Glad to have gone back to a set of bino straps. I realize this isn’t the cool kid thing to do - as everyone has an enclosed case, rangefinder, pistol, etc - all strapped to their torso. Besides looking ridiculous. Many people like them and that’s fine. But I gave it a fair shot and it wasn’t for me. YMMV.
