How to "drop" a deer

I don't want to take away from nutters great post on taxes so I start a new 1.....

I have only ever shot 1 deer with a rifle and I didn't recover because it made it to the property line 250yds. I've watched the utubes and u see neck shots and high shoulder drop dead in thier tracks. I know a buck that I could possibly kill but he's right on the boundary and if I was presented a shot I don't.want him going anywhere. It's not a far shot 100yds. I'm pretty good marksman and am confident I could make the shot accuracy wise but where should I be aiming? There is a good chance the deer could be laying down also

C3 or C4… I shot 2, and the season before last during general gun. And it is amazing what 2” difference can make even with a 30-30…. One was a smaller buck and I shot it in the (C4) region and it only ran 80 yards and laid down, the other was a large doe I shot her C3 blew through both shoulders she dropped instantly. No blood trailing. It was great. The down side was picking out the bad parts and losing shoulder meat.

As others have said B3/3.5 will drop a deer in it's tracks. However expect meat loss with a high velocity caliber. My 308 will literally decimate a shoulder, nothing left but tiny bone fragments and shredded meat.

A neck shot when performed correctly is a perfect lights out shot, however it's risky and ruins the neck roast. I won't take that shot beyond 30 yards unless I'm on a rock solid rest and know the exact spot I'm going to hit. You're essentially aiming for a garden hose sized target.

Additionally I've read somewhere that hydrostatic shock happens upwards of 2500 fps in soft tissue with a 30 caliber projectile, food for thought for your 2300 fps 30-30.

My brother only hunts deer with a marlin lever action 30 30. Dropped every deer he has shot in its tracks. Shoots them in B3 or B4 area. Good luck!

...You're essentially aiming for a garden hose sized target...

Personally, this is why I don't take neck shots. Not much margin for error.

I aim for just about the line between C3/C4. They won't necessarily drop in their tracks, but shouldn't go far.

There have been studies that suggest hits to the Brachial Plexus is most efficient.

Roughly fist size target?

My good bud has a 30/06 he may let me borrow if I asked
I would ask.

30-30 is "the gun that has killed more deer than any other." Maybe that's true, but you could argue sharp pointy sticks are the weapon that has killed more bad guys than any other too. Doesn't mean you'll find somebody relying on one today.

Anything a 30 30 will do, a 30-06 will do way better. I hunted wirh a 30 30 for about 6 years and while I don't recall ever losing a deer with it, there was a noticeable difference when I started shooting deer wirj an 06. I get way more bang-flops with that caliber and a 165 grain Hornady than I get with anything else.

As far as placement, neck shots do usually instantly incapacitate. But my go-to is to shove a bullet through both shoulders. Hard to run on swampy ground in 2wd.

Also, a bullet does not have to strike the spinal cord or vertebrae to paralyze a deer. You have some margin for error with a bullet capable of causing enough hydrostatic shock.

And, if the deer or pig needs to be drt, I will treat it like a crippled duck and shoot it until it stops moving

The deer I shot that ran 250yds was sub 30yds off the ground and I shot c4

Great thread idea. C4 is exactly where I was taught to shoot and I still shoot exactly there during archery season. Last year I learned to go B3 with the gun. I am still nervous about neck shots cuz I am not that great of a marksman with all the additional factors in the field, adrenaline and branches and such.

I don't own a 30/30 but I do shoot deer/hogs with a 357 magnum rifle loaded with Buffalo Bore ammo that's advertised to be nearly identical to 30/30 velocities (2200 fps). After going to the B3 shot placement never had a deer or hog go longer than 50 yards. But fair warning, I have found the copper jackets in the opposite side scapula before though as to where my 270 Winchester just blows a hole right through.

So...I lucked out and got a general gun quota for this wma....maybe we can have some fun. Next time I get a chance I'm going to go to the island and make sure.it looks like he's still hanging out there and maybe set a couple cameras....I'll take some pics and and u guys can follow along and maybe we can maybe learn some stuff together and y'all can see the trials and tribulations. Quota is for Nov 19-21.

I have an example of a property line/boundary.....and if anybody can help me figure out how to kill this buck I'd appreciate it :tearsofjoy:

Left side of the pic is public. Right side private. Red line is the.property line, green circle is an island surrounded by waist deep water that is so thick with cattails and lilly pad and other green stuff u can't walk or use a canoe/yak without making tons of noise. The island is roughly 10yds wide and 20yds long and the escape route is onto the private. The fence runs right thru the island on the very eastern side. He beds on the west side (public side) and he's there a lot based on the amount of hair and poo and every tree on the island is rubbed. I've peppered the area with cameras for 3 years and he rarely goes into the public side. Deer feeders and food plots on the private from what I've heard (can't 100% verify) It's roughly 100 yards from the public southwestern bank of the pond to the island but the island is so thick with brush I don't think I could get a shot thru and I'm also scared because if I hit him I would have to drop him instantly.and I'm not exactly sure if I am confident enough in myself that I can do that

Two bounds and he's on private....he's a nice 1 and a big jerk

Now if that was up here in the Northeast, they'd be in the middle of the rut which would throw a wrench in the plan ... 'cause that target buck might be anywhere chasing hot does. But since you're in FL, the timing should be well ahead of the rut. When is the peak rut in FL? Mid-January?

I don't know...never really paid much attention to that since I can't ever choose when I get to hunt. I just go the dates on the quota so that aspect of the deer puzzle I've ignored.

B 3.5 high shoulder will catch both lungs and the hydro shock will zap the spine...famous writes such as Ron Spomer and Craig Boddington often promotes it...and so do I at least once a year the needed Dead Right There effect downside is meat lose

also it allows the most wiggle room
B3 is most definitely the highest percentage one shot stop IMO. Shot well over 50 there with a 30.06 180gr round nose core-loks and most didn’t even untrack. And the few that did didn’t go over 30 yds.

U are not allowed to drive in these woods when it's not hunting season. I just measured it out and it's a 3 mile bike ride from the parking area to where I stash the bike and go on foot from there. When it opens up to vehicles it cuts that distance to right at 1 mile

If it were me I would set up in one of the two spots marked in blue depending on wind direction, since you are using a gun you can stay back alittle bit and cover multiple exits. Try and put a bullet in him when he stands up. I imagine he is either going to the north east or west south west on his exit by the looks if it. Not sure how thick that island is and how far you can see in it that time if year in your area.

Mabe get you a drone to spy on him?

I know a dude that uses a drone to creep on bears. After a few frosts here the leaves of the corn droop down, so from the air you can spot a bear from literally a mile away in a cornfield.
The one video I watched was so cool, the drone had to have been 500 feet or more high and the bear stuck out like a sore thumb! He 'zoomed in' on it and the bear just sat there looking up at thre drone from about 15 feet away. It was awesome!
