How to "drop" a deer

I didn't see any deer or much sign to get excited about. Lots of hog sign. As far as physical animals I saw 4-5 ft alligator, turkeys, and a bobcat. Drizzling rain off and on kept the temps down thankfully

Question for yeah. I don't know anything about your area. Does that stuff stay green and lush all year or does it die back some when you will be hunting it. Visibility better during season or about the same as in pics.

That stuff stays around unless we have severe drought

In Florida most of our area stays green all year. The marsh grass along the creek will turn brown towards the middle of our gun season

That would be hard to get used to. Love the fall frost and die back in the woods. Stuff that is thicker then heck this time of year you can see catch glimpses of stuff in the fall and narrow it down easier.

Just a idea not sure if it is possible in that stuff. But that big brushy mess running off the north of the island could you find his exit trail and sit just off it in the evening. Get as close to island as possible without spooking him. Has worked for me in the past on the ground like that but different terrain. Probably gonna be boring and either see him or nothing.

That's what I was thinking too. Depending on how the season has been up to that point I make a decision. If I go into that hunt with not having taken a deer yet I may choose to set up in other spots with higher traffic. If I have some meats already I may entertain the thought of sitting on the island. I get bored pretty easy so I really prefer/enjoy jumping around and searching for where they're at vs camping out on a spot. There was very little sign today but it'll pick up as it gets closer and I'll be able to make a better plan. I rarely go scout in the summer anymore but I wanted to go check on this spot early so if it was/is looking good I allow plenty of time for it to chill back out. I'm also not picky and would kill that buck who's shed I found in a heartbeat....

The bears get me too.....I think it shows how much more intelligent they are than the rest of the critters. Coon and bear always investigate....

For what it's worth, I used to lose a couple cameras every year to bear. The last 5 or 6 years I have been spraying my cameras with scent killer when placing them and haven't lost a single camera in that time. I still get just as many pics of bears and will occasionally get the nose of one as he sniffs the cam but they haven't touched them. I cover the lens with a leave and absolutely soak the camera and strap with the spray.

We had black bears on both cameras this weekend. Locked ours on… good thing too found someone’s face and hands trying to pry the camera out in one pic (well the corner of someone’s face) they stayed out of the direct path of the lens

That stuff drives me nuts. If it is not yours leave it alone. I was surprised nobody messed with one if mine last year. I had it up pretty high though. But probably had 20 different people wave at it. High traffic area but get some good night buck pics. Let's me know what is in that area.

I’m done with SST’s as well, too many splash hits, I had the same problem with Nosler ballistic tips back in the day also, after tons of research and reading that nosler had beefed them up I tried them again last season, 7/08 with a 120 BT, complete penetration and 2 shots 2 dead mature bucks, they obviously changed something (Nosler), I’m on the Berger kick now, I have some 210 VLD’s loaded up for my 300 RUM, 185 Classic Hunters 300 Jarret, time will tell. My coyote rifle is a 22-250 loaded up with 52 grain Berger HP varmint, 3750 fps, every coyote is a bang flop with no exit no matter the distance, no spinners or runners just DRT, they pencil in and detonate like they are designed to do, the only noticeable entrance wound I had last season on a coyote is when I hit high shoulder using those 52 grain bergers which is expected, I am completely impressed so far with Bergers. Like you said bullet selection is just as important as shot placement and I agree.
I’m a believer in the Berger line of hunting bullets. I shoot the 135 classic hunter out of my 6.5 Swede at 2925 and it’s a lightning strike to game. One thing I’ve found though is to not shoot where you want to eat. There’s enough shock to suck the life out of a deer with a good 3rd rib from the shoulder shot. Our Florida deer can’t take it anywhere from earhole to a**hole with a fast Berger bullet and walk away.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear, thanks!!

It can be tough to fight the boredom, but that is a buck bedding island. The big one or others will be there. And you only have those couple days for the whole season to hunt it. I’d get in early as you can and sit it all day for both days or until you kill him. No telling what may slip through that marsh throughout the day as the hunters pile in.

A high traffic area will likely be a lot of does or smaller bucks. Gotta get your mind right and just grind it out. That’s hunting, especially big buck bed hunting!

Be confident, it’ll all be worth it! Go kill him!

I put in lots of miles going in nasty stuff....that is only the 2nd shed I've ever found ever...it still has brown/tan color at the base but it's sun bleached the rest and squirrel nibbled.

I’ve dropped several with rifle in A2 or C4. Knock the heart right off the aorta in C4 usually. Don’t go anywhere. Every doe me and a few friends shoot on a farm out of state is A2. No sense tracking and following. Drop em in the field and drive up to em to load em up with the side by side
