How to Hunt By the Numbers

But the NDA map does not reflect the fact that I've almost never seen as many deer on the side of the road as when I drove through Kentucky this past year. Son...there's some deer up there.

It's not surprising that a map of car-deer collisions matches up with the number of deer that you see while driving in a car. I kinda feel like LA juiced its deer numbers a bit and that's colored your perception of the entire map.
That's my point. The data going into the collision map is from one entity measuring one thing. Now, take just one data set the NDA tried to summarize like density. NDA took data from state wildlife agencies. Those states do not go about data collection in the same way. LA collects data from the participants of managed properties. Regular properties aren't included. So, these are the cream of the crop, high dollar places. Yes, with managed habitat and age structures, they see great numbers. But, for your average good old boy club, they aren't getting that data. That's just one state. I've hunted some primo places in LA too that cost as much to lease for one year as a truck does to buy it, and I can tell you, I'd rather hunt a 40 acre tract in the Midwest that costs the same amount to own. And, then you still have access to great public areas.

Bump for the upcoming season. Sharpen your bullets and start looking at last years data!
Are you doing trophies or whatever this year? I know you had that trophy thread last year. I had my opportunity at a trophy for me last year and blew it with a rifle to boot.

Probably not. I saw more big bucks than I've ever seen before during the summer scouting, and I found some nice sheds and deadheads. But I tried to duck hunt northwest MS AND do trophies at the same time. I underestimated how rough on me it would be to do that many 5-6 hours drive weekend hunts. I spent the money on OOS licenses and just didn't have it in me to hunt enough to make it happen.

They're there, I just don't want then bad enough to drive out there.

This year I'll do a north alabama hunt during early season and probably play around in some black belt counties I haven't hit yet. Kinda wanna try to duck hunt in those areas. But there'll be way more 30 minute to 2 hour drives than 6 hour ones.

Duck hunting is a great way to scout for deer. Lots of overlooked spots.
