How to rappel with MadRock Safeguard without dying?

Sorry, I meant SRT and just had a typo despite DRT being a real thing! That is exactly what I was wondering on the safeguard. So going down with lever open and an autoblock below works like ATC with an autoblock where you control the speed/stopping with the autoblock. That leads me to my last question, I think. Will the safeguard stop with the lever up or is there another way to run it on the way down so it doubles up on breaking/safety with the autoblock? I just want to know the process before I order one.

You have to let go of the lever for it to stop. So, theoretically, if you started going ‘too fast’ and panicked and didn’t let go, it could be just like an ATC. However, I will say that I have rappelled from 20’ with it wide open and didn’t feel like it was out of control. It wouldn’t be a ‘free fall’. I have experienced a free fall with a figure 8. It sucked and I still have back issues.

That makes sense. So if you let go of the lever it snaps back down and stops the descent?

Here's a video of a descent using the Safeguard, starts at about the 6:40 mark.

Awesome, thanks. How many folks run that without the autoblock?

I run an ATC with an autoblock and my Safeguard without. I have found my brake hand sufficient with the Safeguard.

Just my 2 cents.

If you have no prior experience at all, find someone local and get hands on instruction. Or at least hands on observation.

Then

Start basic. Really basic. If you master rappelling with an ATC and autoblock (french prusik) then try the mechanical belay device when your experience allows. Don't rush it. The entire concept is very basic but you can definitely seriously injury yourself with one small assumption.

JCline's video was all I needed to get started with SRT but I've been rappelling for 30 years, professionally for ~25.

Belay devices like the Lifeguard and Gri-Gri were not made to be used the way we use them here. Basically for the reason you just learned. So you need to look at backing up the rappel with an autoblock. The lifeguard becomes your rappel device clipped on your bridge, which replaces the more typical ATC or figure eight device, etc you'll see in most videos on rappelling. The autoblock is a low friction prusik on the tag end of the rope where you would hold it with your strong hand. You clip the autoblock lower than the rappel device, usually 18" - 20" or so below the rappel device. I clip it in at my linesmans loop, some will clip it to a leg strap.

Once the autoblock is properly tensioned you can flip the lever on the lifegard to release the cam off the rope and the autoblock will keep you in place. If you apply light pressure at the top of the autoblock prusik with your other hand while holding the lifeguard lever open it will slip and you will descend. Take the pressure off the prusik and you stop,

Once you get the feel of that at at low height you'll understand what is going on there and you can just hold the lifeguard lever wide open and manage the descent by applying and releasing pressure on the autoblock. It will take some practice, but once you get it its a safer and more manageable way to decend without burning up the rope or your hand.

Meant to add too that you can hold the lifeguard lever at different pressures so the autoblock doesn't have to work so hard too. Its something you have to do yourself, but its easy.
Autoblock made repelling super smooth for me. I wouldn't repel without it now that I know how useful they are.

Can some post a pic of a belay device backed up with the auto block? I am having a hard time “seeing” it.

One suggestion is no matter what device you are using to rappell keep your free hand on tail of rope for control. I can come out of a tree pretty quickly using a SRT device like the Roperunner or Ropewrench but always back up with my free hand.

Joe has several videos on YouTube. He makes it look easy. I have 2 days of rappelling practice in. Need to add an autoblock to my rig.

Update: Day #3 Rapelling

Ran Prusick knot from an old tether. Need more cord to make an autoblock. BUT this works very well! I just gripped the prusick and gently pulled the lever on the Safegaurd. Much more control. I'll be adding the autoblock as soon as I get some longer cord.

I believe this guy did a good job on his video of showing how he uses the Madrock Safeguard:

Madrock Safeguard: THE PERFECT rappel device for SADDLE HUNTERS!!!

His video helped me.

This video should start at the rappel. Just do this. Pretend the handle is like the accelerator on your car and start slow. If you yank it you will have problems.

I run the safeguard without the autoblock but my rappelling was jumpy before I learned to control the tag end. I also looked at different ways to reppel without the safeguard and one was with just a carabiner wrapping the spine. So I decided to use that with the safeguard. While locked in place with the safeguard I clipped a spare carabiner I just usually carry to my linemans loop and wrapped my tag end around it twice and pulled the lever it slows you descent based on the number of wraps you put on the carabiner. Very simple really and I can still stop when I need with the safeguard. The only draw back is it puts curls in your rope. I usually get them out before pulling my rope out of the tree.
