Today I did some work for gentleman from New Zeeland. He's a Biologist working for a local University. We got to talking and it just so happens he's a hunter too. Anyway, he told me that if I ever wanted to hunt in New Zeeland to contact him and he would hook me up! As good as that sounds, it's outside of any budget for an "out of state hunt". Regardless it was pretty cool of him to offer and he was serious. His family still lives there and would provide any assistance I needed. Has anyone here hunted in NZ?

Oh man the roarin’red stags and the gobbling turkeys….. are chamois sheep there too? I’d love to hunt NZ!!!

I'd go in a minute if the opportunity presented itself. It sounds like if you could pull off the airfare the hunt might be pretty affordable.

I've never been, but the red stag they have there are something else. It sure would be tough to not be able to bring all that meat home though.

with an offer like that, you really should go.
NZ has been high on my surf trip list, I loathe flights over 6-8 hours but need to prioritize Australia / Hawaii and new zealand for surf/ hunts before another decade passes.
I have a few friends that spent a lot of time traveling NZ and highly recommend it.

It’s a longggggg asssss flight for sure. I took my wife to Australia ona business trip and we went coach. I got there and the president said why didn’t you fly business i would have picked up your wife’s tab too…….. Damn!

I hunted there in 1995. I had a friend living in Auckland who set up a week long hunt in the bush by helicopter. It was a private land lease hunt so we had the area to ourselves which is a huge advantage over public land. We never heard or saw a red stag but there were enough sika deer. It was April on the North Island so they were rutting.

After 6 days I managed to arrow a 2 year old stag with my recurve. Definitely a memory I will cherish the rest of my days.

Much of the hunting in NZ for reds is on private for deer that aren't nearly as wild as the ones in the bush. If that works for you go for it. If you want to hunt some of the warmest game on the planet then you'll want to hunt reds or sika in the bush.

I know what I would choose again.

Never hunted there but I recall some MeatEater episodes and podcasts from there. Unlimited tags, no seasons, all big game is feral exotic species so they want it dead. Feral cattle - free range wild beef! I want some of that! Would seriously consider retiring there if their politics were different.

Brian Call: Gritty YouTube and podcast did a few episodes on each media about it. Very high on my list and even higher if I had a contact! According to them, as cheap or cheaper than most travel hunts that require flying.
