Hunting arrow weight for compound bow shooters

Last year I was at 420 grains total weight, rage trypans. Had some poor penetration issues when I hit bone. I didn’t do my job... this year i switched to black eagle rampage 250s 175 up front with a total arrow weight at 525 or so and also switched to a fixed blade. I’m expecting much better penetration this year.

And for those who just think a heavier arrow is the ticket. IT ISN'T! Get some extreme foc going. That's were you will see your arrows fly really good especially with fixed broadheads. For instance I got 125 of brass insert inside of a 28.5" victory 350 arrow with a 200 grain vandemon single bevel broadhead. Flight is unbelievable. But if I remove the 125 insert things get wonky. Flight gets a little erratic. Get as much weight up front as you can. Try it before any negative comments on this. Because if you actually try this, you'll see it's true.

That's interesting.
Where did you find the vandieman broadheads? Only source I have found is a shop in Australia.
"Born and raised outdoors" did a fixed blade accuracy test with a hooter shooter and the Vandiemans came out on top.

That’s why I went with gold Tip Velocity 300. The arrow itself is very light but I have 15% foc. Total weight of 455. I plan on increasing to 475. I use the FACT insert weights.
Still under the magic 500 mark bro. Seriously, Terri getting it to the or higher. You'll be amazed

How much can I throw at a forward insert without getting crazy on the FOC? I’m not real familiar with what spines can handle what forward grain weight percentages.

I could up that insert to 100gr easily.
Im personally shooting this with no issue. Victory 350 arrow, 28.5" , fob fletching, 100 grain brass insert and 125 fixed broadhead. Im sitting right at 510. This is shooting out of my matthews switchback @ 70 lbs

I got very interested in FOC after my wife lost a buck to very poor penetration. If you guys have never set your wife up a bow, and then have that set up cost her her first buck, well.... I don't recommend it:tearsofjoy:. She is now shooting axis 340's with a 75 grain insert and feathers. Tried a few heads, had good results with bi-polar 175's, and stinger 150's, this season will likely be zwickey delta's at 200 or so. She has a 28 inch draw and pulls 44 pounds on a reign 6. Her setup zips through deer now.
My daughter shoots good with the same 350 victory arrows I shoot but 25" ,150 grain brass insert, 125 Magnus broadhead, 40# . So far good little setup. Still over 500 grains giving it good foc and good momentum

Where are you getting your inserts? Ethics?

I killed 3 deer last year with great results. Two were hard quartering shots with complete pass through. At 27.5” and 70 pounds my bow is shooting 270 FPS at 455 grains. I have great trajectory and great penetration. I agree with the 500 grain mark but I’m satisfied with my results so far. I shoot magnus cut on contact heads also.

I seen a Volkswagen go through a side of a house before. I wouldn't advise that though.
You can get a pass through at any given day. It's the additional momentum you get if something (and it WILL) goes wrong. Also the flight gets amazing with the higher foc with 500+

Still going. Dan was a huge help and very responsive via email early this morning. We are still finalizing the transaction but I think they are just going to work over there now so I expect we will get things wrapped up sometime tonight. I'm hoping for a 7-10 shipping window but who knows. They are completely out of the 125gr because of the video mentioned earlier (highly suggest everyone check it out. Tooth ofthe arrow and g 5 s were a close second and third.) I ended up ordering the 150s and cant wait to try them

570 gr total for setup. Have Easton axis 260 with 75 brass and 100 grain head. Still getting 277fps. I run a single pin and shot 10-40 without moving. Thing I like most is how quiet my bow is. I think a lot of times deer reaction not only to the sound of the bow but also the sound of arrows as they fly thur air. I went with 4 fletch aae stealth canes for last 2 years mostly due to quieter arrow flight. I videos arrows flying by at 40yds[midflight] so that I couldn’t hear the bow going off nor the arrow hitting the target to narrow down the quietest flying arrow. That is counter productive to the Foc convo but to me whatever shoots the best group with the advantage of being quiet is better for me. I’ve taken some longer shots on deer given the right conditions and deer have never moved on shot.
