Hunting Hoody

Been using this and it has worked great. Pocket is higher than regular jacket pockets. Wish it had pit zips. They make a heavier one also that’s full zip.

I really like zippered pockets. I hate getting them full of bark and junk from the woods. Nobody offers a garment that checks all my boxes...

We all would like various ways to have zippers in different locations (pits, kangaroo pouch) and for me I’d like a jacket or two to have a zipper on each side that’s reversible to run my bridge through. I’d like to find an alteration shop near me and have some work done. I’d think a skilled person on here could have a good side gig from all of us.

Stumbled across this looking at a sale at Scheels today and it reminded me of this thread. Seems pretty close to what many were looking for. Not sure of the quality of Scheel's clothing but, the price is good.

Why isn’t there a beefy hoody for bowhunting? Think something like a Sitka Dakota but in a quiet material. I would kill for a quality piece like that. Something with an awesome hand pocket and half zip would be perfect. Pit zips would be ultimate. Anybody know of anything?

This is the Dakota:

It may not be as jacket like as the one you picture, but Sitka makes the Whitetail Fanatic Hoody. It is one of the best pieces of clothing I own. And I have a small cabelas in my garage.

Key features: Silent, integrated face mask, hoodie, kangaroo pocket, chest pocket, warm, works as outer layer or mid layer. And one of the coolest features are the integrated mittens in the sleeves. They are thin, but I use them a lot. Just and unbelievable thought out piece of gear. Sitka also sells the heavy weight hoody, but the Fanatic Hoody is incredible. Depending on conditions, I wear it by itself, or with the Stratus or Fanatic vest. I also wear it under the Status Jacket.

If you are looking for a cold weather outer layer hoodie, then why not go with the one you picture?

I don't have the fanatic hoodie but I would like too. It is the only fanatic piece I'm missing and probably the most versatile piece of the set.

Fanatic Hoody = 16.6oz
Heavyweight Hoody = 14.8oz
Heavyweight Zip-T = 12.5oz

Is the fanatic hoody much warmer than the core series heavyweight line?

After I sell some stuff I’m going to give this one a try!

I only have the fanatic line. No other pieces from Sitka. My base layers consist of Kuiu zip off bottoms, which I love and clearance Cabela's stuff for tops.

My cousin has the fanatic hoodie and swears it is the best piece he has. He says it is super warm. I'm not certain how it would compare to the heavyweights. I'm sure someone will chime in for you though.

I have a few hoodies from legendary whitetails I wear regularly hunting and love them. Most of my everyday wardrobe is from there too. The always run great sales this time of year just keep an eye out

I find the Fanatic to be very warm. It is thicker, but not bulky. I believe the material is a four way stretch, so it conforms and articulates nicely. I don't have the heavyweight top, but I do have the heavyweight bottoms. I don't see how the heavyweight could be better than the fanatic and I am not sure it is as versatile. The Fanatic hoody does not have a water repellent coating, so its not an outer garment for all weather. However, it is an excellent outer garment just not the best for rain on its own. It serves well under an outer shell. As an outer garment it is best suited for those mid season hunts, where it is silent and still. And when the temp drops, add a vest or jacket.

Funny thing is that I don't really like hoodies for hunting...or hoods on my jackets. Most are too bulky around my neck and pulled over my head, I find them too muffling, hinder my hearing and can block peripheral sight. I also don't like them over my head when I draw my bow, so I prefer no hood and would wear separate head and neck wear that doesn't interfere as much with hearing and most importantly my draw. Yes, you can flip the hoodie down, but I have drawn too many times and had to let off. The nice thing about the fanatic hoody is that the hoodie is light and not bulky. You don't even feel its back there and when its up, its thin enough to hear through and non intrusive. It is cut to provide eye relief as not to impede peripheral vision. It takes the chill off the back of your neck but if it is seriously cold, you want additional head gear. Anyway, its an excellent piece. Get one.

It seems I'm the only person a little disappointed in the Fanatic hoody. I picked it up last month during the black Friday sale. It's much thinner then I expected. I have an under armour cold gear hoody that's much thicker with a similar built in face mask and thumb holes in the sleeves. I was on a weekend hunt and wore the UA hoody on Saturday then my wife was nice enough to deliver my Fanatic hoody to camp when it showed up Saturday afternoon so I wore it with identical layers in almost identical conditions on Sunday. The UA hoody was significantly warmer. The Fanatic hand mittens were annoying on the first hunt but, I acknowledge that with some time they are something I could probably get used to. It's a piece I'm probably going to keep and use in the early season (although I'm tempted stop send it back to Scheels and get my money back) but, when the weather gets cold I'll grab the UA hoody first.

Yeah, Sitka used to advertise the material weight and I haven't seen that in awhile, so I can only suppose. Based on garmet weight, seemed in the ball park of the core hwt lineup for warmth, with some functional differences, like the mittens thing, ninja mask, and kangaroo pouch. Sounds like its a bit warmer then.

I wonder how it compares then to the Fanatic Lite Jacket for thermal comfort zones.

We all have differing opinions. There are definitely heavier and warmer hoodies. It depends on what you are looking for. And I am not suggesting that the Fanatic is the heaviest or the warmest. It's lightweight for the warmth and functionality it provides, which I like. And the integrated features make it unique. Maybe Scheels will take it back. They aint cheap for sure!

I have the Stratus set. I've never held the fanatic light jacket but, I don't think the two are comparable. I would compare the fanatic hoody to a light/mid weight grid fleece layer. I definitely think it is a functional piece, its just not what I expected from various reviews and the description.

Well I have the Gradient hoody, it’s a bit much for my taste, almost too much for a layering piece, it’s better on it’s own, I wanted something to go under my Stratus jacket so the Fanatic hoody was my next choice but after reading some reviews about the mittens that’s not happening, I hate things like that, so next up is the heavyweight core, maybe I will just stick with my UA cold gear hoody, it seems to just work fine and at half the price.

Yeah, it's a functional piece and typical Sitka quality. If I didn't already have the UA hoody its something I would probably like. And for the record the UA hoody I have is the heaviest grid fleece I have ever seen and I don't think is made any longer. The Sitka hoody just isn't not quite as warm as I expected for something in the "fanatic" line.

I also have the Stratus set, which is what I find works well with the Fanatic Hoody. But if the op is looking for an total all purpose outer shell, the fanatic likely isn't it.
