HuntStand vx OnX

I've used OnX and Hunstand and give the nod to Hunstand as the imagery is so much better IMO.

Huntstand works well in no service areas as long as you preload the hunt areas before you go.

I have never used Huntstand but I do use both OnX and Huntwise. The imagery for both is excellent, I really, really, really, like OnX and highly recommend it. Still getting used to Huntwise I like the Jeff Sturgis weather predictor on it. My .02 cents worth!!

I have used Huntstand for the past 4 yrs. Have a ton of data saved and I started with the free version till it dropped the ability to save property boundaries & info and then upgraded. I forget when but they did do an upgrade @ so point over the past 2 yrs and it took me by surprise and had a bit of a learning curve but for scouting, property owners/line info, icons for stands, scrapes, trails etc., basically anything I need to know its there. I did review OnX with some screen shots sent to me and did not like the map displays, I like Huntand better.
I can't remember the last time I travelled w/o a compass in my pack. I have never been totally lost but got turned around enough to say I paid the price when I hit a swamp. I had a Garmin etex I really liked before I had an iphone but when the display finally started breaking up I did not replace it. 2ea areas I like have zero cell service so GPS certainly has a great place and I can do pretty much anything I need to do with topo maps and a compass for everyday hunting but the electronics sure are VERY nice.. I'll relook @ Onx. My buddy has it on his phone..

Wanted to give you guys a little update on what I do and how it saved my butt this past weekend. I went stalking for hogs and did as I previously mentioned, used my hand help GPS (Garmin etrex 20 with birdseye) as my primary and then onx if I wanted to see a different look. I was stalking along and decided to take a seat on a fallen log. When I sat down I glanced at my onx to see if I saw anything I wanted to walk towards and then sat my phone down on the log. When I got back to camp that night I couldn't find my phone and I knew exactly where it was, on the log I sat down on some 5-6 hours earlier. Had I not been using my gps as well I would have had the hardest time finding it. It would have been found eventually, but with the GPS it was as easy as back tracking and walked straight to it that night. It's sad to say that I have dropped a couple things while walking or it may have gotten pulled off my pack while walking. Having this hand help GPS has saved my butt more times that I care to share.

I will buy the cheapest bulk batteries I can find each year and keep them in my pack as needed. It's comforting to know that not only is the battery life on the gps around 15-20 hours(I cut it off when I get to my stand to save battery) but that if it does die on me, I can always swap them out in less than a minute.

I used basemap this year. I switched over from OnX and really liked it. Both seemed to work well, but basemap has more layers. I really enjoyed having the USGS topo maps as an option for a layer.

I would have to give the "huntwind" part of basemap about 3 starts out of 5. It works okay for showing the dominant wind, but once you get into the wood, different microclimates, and thermals, it sometimes doesnt give a very accurate representation of what the wind is actually doing at your blind.

Huntstand is $25 for every state. I think Onx can be had for $10 for one state or $99 for all. We hunt multiple states so Huntstand it is. Very happy with it.

This is the great debate. lol I have a account for OnX, Huntstand, and Basemap. Basemap is my favorite at the moment. Back in the early days of Scoutlook (now huntstand), this type of app was good, but lacked. However, with the competition between them now, they are all starting to get really good and updated. I've had several conversations via email with the OnX guys about improvements I thought of and they were very responsive. Some ideas were even implemented. For the moment, the only reason I give the nod to Basemap is because of the layers and 50 state property ownership vs 1 state with OnX. However, towards the end of last year, I was noticing that without signal, even with offline maps loaded, Basemap seemed to not want to load basic functions and didn't want to save waypoints. I'll be playing with both again this year.

I have Huntstand, Huntwise, oNX, and BaseMap on my phone. I have gone almost 100% to BaseMap for two reasons. One, like many I hunt public land so I will mark a tree and use the "go to" portion of the app to find these trees in the dark. The BaseMap app does better in this mode than oNX IMO. Two, the aerial photos, at least where I hunt are more recent than oNX. My $0.02

I've been following. I went with Base camp for now. I looked at Onx, Basecamp and Gaia. I like the fact I can cross state boundries and still get property info.

Glitchy…..kept reloading. I was able to screenshot some parcels, but not liking the setup.

I think they all offer a little something different and depending on how you hunt you might like one over the other. I do not hunt any private land so OnX for me was the way to go. I can download a map for Offline use when I don't have service. I actually use that most times anyways. For how I use OnX its been great and zero issues. I only hunt the state I live in so paying the annual fee isn't a big deal or the added benefits. I also like it for waterfowl hunting and knowing who owns what properties. Great overall tool
