I've been using HuntStand for a few years now, but at times it's a little clunky, esp. when I don't have good cell service.

Anyone have experience with both apps that can share insight on OnX and it's performance with no signal.

Which do you prefer? Why?
 
I like OnX maps. You can save maps so you’ll still have them even without service. Idk if HuntStand offers that or not?
 
I really liked Scoutlook but it merged with HuntStand this past fall and I tried my best to accept the change but ended up hating it. OnX is my goto now and all I use. It works great in offline mode if you download the maps of your hunting areas. My only complaint is it sucks battery life extremely quick even when in offline mode. Can’t understand why that is but not a real big deal since I carry a battery pack anyway and can recharge.
 
I used both huntstand and onx this last season. I really love the user interface on huntstand. With the homepage Its alot easier to navigate the app. Huntstand also has some cool features like the Huntzone. Its a little circle thing that helps you visually understand what your scent is doing. It only takes wind direction in to account though. I also found huntstand easier to share my maps with my friends. OnX offline maps are awesome. Id find that i used huntstand before I got in to the woods and switched to OnX when I was in the woods because I get horrible service where I normally hunt. I felt like with onx you need formal training to get the most out of it. That being said I will probably take the same approach I did last season unless I get OnX figured out a little better. I paid for OnX and used the free version of huntstand fyi.
 
I like OnX for its ease of use and ability to pre-download maps for areas that may not have cel coverage. My gripe is the basic navigation functions (go to a waypoint, distance remaining, lack of a decent compass) leave a lot to be desired. I still use an older app for that stuff but wish I didn't have to.

No opinion on the HuntStand, never used it.

Yeah I have some saved in my watch later for it. I was already too deep in to hunstand to make the switch at the beginning of the season. I purchased OnX on accident by not quitting my free trial before it switched to the paid membership. It ended up working out and I will be renewing my membership for next season and if I get a good grip with OnX I will more than likely use it exclusively. You get alot more out of the free version of huntstand than you do with the free version of OnX though.
 
I used both and definitely like OnX better. The map download feature without cell service is probably the main reason as it's a great asset due to no cell service where I typically hunt. I encountered no problems using the off-grid feature with OnX.
 
It could just be my lack of skills with OnX but I have OnX and I've found it takes awhile to download an offline map (like a looong while). Most of my hunting is sketchy to no cell service so I find myself taking screenshots which kind of defeats the purpose of the offline maps feature.
 
I love OnX. There are a few features of huntstand that I like too. Overall, I find myself using OnX more.

If OnX had the ability to select multiple pins/items and share them all at the same time, or build shared map resources...it would be all over.
 
OnX paired with deercast. I can DL the maps and go offline even if I have service, keeps me from playing on my phone in the tree. Also the tracker app is great, I use it to save access routes and can walk right to my stand from the route I scouted. The other cool thing is the different government/private owned lands that you can turn on/off to scout different states.
 
I tried OnX briefly, but it never made much sense to me. I hunt private land almost exclusively. Hunt Stand REALLY seems to cater to that better.
 
how much is hunt stand. i bought onx with the hunting public discount and like it. havent played around with it too much yet
 
Onx hands down, it gives me the confidence to hunt areas, especially public I never hunted before. This is the first year I ever hunted out of state and I gained that confidence via Onx Hunt. I highly recommend it. Although I have had minimal to no issues accessing my information online "live" if you will, you save an area/map while you have access under "Off Grid" and then later IF you are having trouble accessing your saved info., just access it from Off grid and you can see everything you saved, your waypoints etc. I always carry a GPS and a compass when hunting large tracks of relatively unknown public but I rarely have needed to use them if at all. It is a great resource. I went with the Elite with the THP discount.

Hunt stand is $25 for 1 year for their full service subscription. With that, you can download maps for offline use and get their property line & ownership info. I have used it for several years and it does what I need. I haven’t used On-X so I can’t comment on how they compare.
