I Just Need To Vent

Exactly why not to prep, or do so very discretely. Might as well hang a "hunt here" sign. People are ridiculous. I ran into two guys in one of "my" public spots this year that in talking to them I'm pretty sure moved in because I was parked there a few times last year.
I just don't like hacking away with a saw minutes before hunting.

Not saying that doesn’t suck but, how are they supposed to know you’ll be back? I mean that’s a long time you weren’t in that spot. Maybe the best thing to do would have been to leave a platform there so they couldn’t put a stand up without taking yours down, that would cross the line. They have the right to hunt there just as much as you provided they have permission. It’s nobody’s “spot”, first come first serve imo. I wouldn’t let it stop me from hunting there if that’s where I felt I needed to be.

I’d hunt it anyway. Same tree or closest one. And make it obvious you hunted it. Hopefully a buck sack hanging off his stand!!!

Only usable tree in that spot.

If you read my original post, you would know that I already covered that. And that equipment is not allowed to be left unattended in PLOTS.

I did read your post. You said it was back in September so that’s well over a month ago. Sounded like you just trimmed and didn’t leave anything, if you left steps or a platform then I would agree it’d be a total **** move. How do you know they don’t have permission. I’ve prepped several places I’ve never came back to hunt. Am I supposed to be mad if someone found them and put a stand there... no. I understand it’s frustrating but I also don’t see how that person is in the wrong.

Is cutting stuff (i.e. the prepping you'd mentioned...) allowed on PLOTS?

I said in my original post that it was possible they had permission and also explained twice now that you can't leave equipment unattended on PLOTS. I was originally just venting my frustrations not trying to get into an argument. We're just not on the same page. Apologies!

Well you sure are argumentative for not trying to get into and argument. I was just trying to help you realize that there might be another side to the story. I get it, you couldn’t leave anything, so get permission to then. My point was that person has no idea you are coming back. You could have trimmed lanes and already shot a buck in archery and been done, never to return. Just saying, two sides man.

It's publicly huntable land in a spot you han't visited for months. Have more than 1 spot. This just doesn't seem particularly objectionable or surprising to me.

I tend to agree with the others. It's a public huntable spot. You don't know if the other person has written permission. For all you know, it could be the owner. Sorry man, but just because you remove a couple of dead branches at least a month and a half ago, and haven't gone back since then, doesn't make a public accessible spot yours exclusively.

Back in September, I had the perfect tree all picked out and prepped for saddle hunting. I was still in practice mode with my steps and saddle gear and not yet hunting out of it. Finally, on our gun season opener, I was going to take my saddle on it's maiden voyage. I parked, put my saddle on, loaded up pack and bow, and I was off. Finally! I topped the ridge and to my horror, there's a stand close to my spot! Correction, it's in THE tree I had so lovingly prepared! It's in PLOT land, open to hunting to anyone, but you need written permission from landowner to leave a stand unattended. Possible, but I have a certain amount of skepticism whether this person has that. That's beside the point. Point is, I was pretty disgusted with the situation to say the least. Pretty easy to tell fresh tree trimming and pretty easy to figure someone had a reason for doing it. And pretty unethical and inconsiderate to poach someone else's spot, IMO. Sure hope they appreciated my efforts! With the weather rapidly changing to too cold for tree sitting, I guess my gear will probably have to wait till next year to see any use. Truly bummed out!
That sucks. Did you leave anything in the tree to mark your spot?
It is too cold to use a tree saddle? Why is that?

Only useable tree in the area and your surprised someone put a stand in it?
Suck it up butter cup! Go find another spot and kill a biggin!!

See you in a tree, Ricky

North Dakota. In the 30s one day and low teens or single digits a day or two later. Hard to dress right to not get overheated on the way in and yet stay warm sitting still for hours. I'm pretty tough to the cold if I'm moving around but the older I get the wimpier I get for sitting still in the cold wind. And no, I didn't leave anything behind to mark. Not allowed on PLOTS without written permission from landowner. Open to hunting for anyone but permission required for leaving equipment unattended. Other person could possibly have that written permission, but I don't since I don't leave stuff out. Had equipment stolen before. That's what drew me to climbing stands and now saddle hunting. Nothing left for thieves to steal. Jeeze, I am sorry I ever brought it up. Not referring to you, but have got such negative responses from others who seem to have misunderstood my original post, entirely. Your response was fine, though. I don't mind explaining my wimpyness!

Yeah, yeah..... I know. No not surprised as much as disappointed. I'm signing off now. Didn't mean to cause such a stir!!!

I tried to reply but I think I typed it in the wrong spot somehow, so not sure if you got it. It ended up above your post instead of below like it usually does. Not sure how I managed to do that but my dog attacking my face while I was typing may have had something to do with it!!!

Don't give up. I almost gave up on this site a few times but I figured a few people might like to hear what I say. I think it must be just the initiation. Tomorrow is my only hunting day in the 50s left for a while. In the 30s after that and maybe rain as well. :confused2:

Thanks for the support. So many seem to have misunderstood my post. I never said it was MY spot, exclusively. I never denied the possibility that the other person may have had the necessary permission. I'm pretty sure it's not the landowner. Not a hunter. Probably pushing 100 years old. Nope, I don't think so! I was simply sharing a disappointing experience. Sure got some folks riled up. Not my intention at all. Have a great evening!
