Back in September, I had the perfect tree all picked out and prepped for saddle hunting. I was still in practice mode with my steps and saddle gear and not yet hunting out of it. Finally, on our gun season opener, I was going to take my saddle on it's maiden voyage. I parked, put my saddle on, loaded up pack and bow, and I was off. Finally! I topped the ridge and to my horror, there's a stand close to my spot! Correction, it's in THE tree I had so lovingly prepared! It's in PLOT land, open to hunting to anyone, but you need written permission from landowner to leave a stand unattended. Possible, but I have a certain amount of skepticism whether this person has that. That's beside the point. Point is, I was pretty disgusted with the situation to say the least. Pretty easy to tell fresh tree trimming and pretty easy to figure someone had a reason for doing it. And pretty unethical and inconsiderate to poach someone else's spot, IMO. Sure hope they appreciated my efforts! With the weather rapidly changing to too cold for tree sitting, I guess my gear will probably have to wait till next year to see any use. Truly bummed out!

I get it that sucks, that’s the challenge of pressure. Prep a couple more good spots & go kill a good one. My last 3 deer have been going in blind sits zero prep. You can get it done!
Yeah, that's probably what is needed. Hunting spots are getting harder and harder to find. Just need to get farther off beaten path.

I’d go ahead and climb up and hunt it. Deer would see an empty stand and you’d be hiding behind the tree in your saddle I presume.

The thought crossed my mind. But below that stand would be too low and the size of the tree makes above impossible.

That’s funny I had the same thing happened to me only on private land today had a spot prepared sat there once before early season went back there today only to find a hang on stand and mowed trails after having a epic failure went and looked around on the mowed trails only to find another stand less than hundred yards from the hang on with trees cut all around and area were they have been bedding the only thing I did was to contact the land owner and now I have to post it up for removed tree stands and left a note saying if he would like his equipment back to contact the land owner and if seen on the property

Do NOT discuss it with the landowner. Chalk it up to “lessons learned” and move on.
Not sure why you would say that. If there is no written permission, then the law is being broken by this other "Hunter". Without asking landowner, there's no way to find out if there is written permission or not. What good are laws if not enforced? PLOTS land is intended for use by all sportsmen. That's why the rules are in place.

I always fog the area with Axe body spray and move on. People do the illegal stand things all the time in NC public, so I just make sure the deer are more aware and stay away.

That’s cold blooded!!! Lol

I’d hunt it anyway. Same tree or closest one. And make it obvious you hunted it. Hopefully a buck sack hanging off his stand!!!

Exactly why not to prep, or do so very discretely. Might as well hang a "hunt here" sign. People are ridiculous. I ran into two guys in one of "my" public spots this year that in talking to them I'm pretty sure moved in because I was parked there a few times last year.

Causing friction or stress w/landowner between hunters is never good. Sometimes it just makes you look bad for complaining and I've seen lands closed to hunters because of the very thing, May be better to handle it between hunters or just move on. Just my opinion.

That’s what I was getting at just another chance to find a good spot... be happy about the access you have it’s easier to lose than you think.

Well in my case they had cut trees down not saplings which I was asked not to do which means property is destroyed and by letting the owner know it was not me and I’m trying to do the right thing safety is number one especially when you don’t gun hunt or post up and hunt a hunter no thanks my time is precious a house a wife and 2 boys sorry I’ll do right thing

If it came up in conversation about access by others then maybe. But other than that I don’t want any possible reason for the landowner to think that it’s more trouble than it’s worth.
It's PLOTS land. Private Land Open To Sportsmen.
