The history major in me needs to point out that it wasn't the effectiveness in combat necessarily that was the issue, but rather the amount of time needed to train a competent archer vs. the training time needed for a firearm.
 
I had a buddy that shot his neighbor's house once. Luckily it was pretty far away and right at the sill plate level so no real damage done
