Impromptu edge quality

I
Sandpaper...start at 80 go up 800
I have a stones at 750, 1000, and 6000. I sharpie the edges and get all the sharpie off at 750, and then work through 1000/6000 until the edge is shiny. They cut paper but do not cut hair well which tells me it need to be sharper.

Not stones... actual sand paper. And also shaving sharp usually needs to be leather stropped.

I found a montec on an arrow out in the woods....try as I might I could never get it slicky sharp no matter what I tried....

that’s depressing, I’ve been debating changing out broadheads. I’ve shot two deer with them, one through the heart dropped within 30 yards, the a Second a double lung (towards the back of the lungs and sliced the liver). I didn’t stop the deer and she stepped as I shot. The track job was about 150 yards. Both left very little blood trail seem with clean pass throughs.

i have a set of day six heads I may try but I need to buy replacement blades since they’re a pain to sharpen.

It might just be me.....I had similar with the NAP razor. They get pretty sharp...on a scale of 1-10 I'd say 5-6 but I could never get them into the same slick slippy sharp as a 2 blade. Single bevels are relatively easy to get 9-10 after the initial sharpening and getting the bevel set to my fixture. I have some double bevel broadheads and they get pretty sharp too but they sit in the tackle box or I give singles away to people. I just prefer to use the single bevels...

Tried a pack of montecs back when they first came out and I couldnt get them nearly as sharp as I wanted too. Killed a couple of deer with them but the blood trails were very poor with double lung hits. From what I gather the newer heads do sharpen better and I would either try the sandpaper as mentioned or a 3 sided jewelstik. Either way strop them after sharpening. Fixed 3 blade heads are just not ever going to get as sharp as a 2 blade and esp a single bevel due to the blade angle but you should be able to get them plenty sharp for effectively killing stuff.

This is what I use with my Montecs.

Edit: I should also mention that I find the Montec CS sharpen better than the stainless.

they tune well but damn their blood trails do suck, even with my first deer being a heart/blood vessel shot I saw two blood spots that looked like someone painted the ground one 10-15 yards from the impact site and one about 5 feet from the deer. This second oneayarred with good blood but stopped after 75 yards, I had to track footprints there after.

I’m really debating swapping to my day six heads to see what they do.

Leatherman… she’s a little dull. But I keep her around for the pliers.
