Well my son has decided to get into golf and lo and behold he’s a quick learner so he’s hooked. A friend loaned us some wedges but he needs a driver and a putter. He’s 14 but 6’2” so I guess he’s adult sized.
What’s a goodish beginner driver and putter? There’s tons for sale on FB marketplace around me. We already have a bag. I’m not interested in dropping $100+ on each in case he decides in 6 months he’s not interested anymore. Down the road if he’s all in then ipp drop some coin on serious product.

The good news is the golf industry has more clubs than it knows what to do with because they’re worse gear junkies then hunters so used clubs can be had at great prices. The ping series is my go to suggestion for overall best bang for the buck for beginners. The design really hasn’t changed a ton in 20 years, they’re forgiving, and they play well. PING g5, g10, g15 in order old to newer (cheaper to more expensive). Ping i2s aren’t bad either albeit even older and a little less forgiving. The drivers are fine as well. Should be able to get a full set and driver for $150 or less. I worked at a golf course through highschool and college and played in highschool and almost in college lol. No need to drop serious coin until he’s at least a 18 handicap and even then the clubs are not the game changer, practice and time are.

And any odyssey putters will do wonderful for beginners all the way up to lower handicap players. The 2-ball is ugly but a classic. Ping blade putters are great as well.

And 6’2” yes he will be in adult clubs. Regular shafts are fine until he gets good and swing speed goes up. If he sticks with it more than a couple months grips are worth the money. They're easy enough to do yourself but some pro shops will replace for free if you buy from them.

Dont worry about heads right now, just avoid high launch/high spin combos with his size. 6'2 he's probably going to have plenty of clubhead speed unless he has no strength at all so the shafts are going to be more important. Stiff shafts at the minimum, I'd wager he'd need x-stiff, he might need longer than standard given his height unless he has really long arms. If you can find a club fitter, theres should be plenty in Northern VA, that would help alot.

Golf clubs older than 4 years old can be had for a song.

For drivers, look for any of them that have adjustable heads. You can customize it a bit to help with some tendencies. Also if you need to change shafts, its very easy to order a shaft that has the appropriate adapter on it so you dont have to take it to a club builder to swap shafts.

i hate the 2 ball. i go crosseyed with it any time i get tempted to try it more than a few rounds. Same thing with other mallets.

I don’t particularly use one myself but never had a problem with them.

Big thing with putters is find something that feels good and and the ball starts where you aimed it. Nothing more annoying that a putter that wont start the ball where you aim it.

2nd Swing is a great resource for used clubs at decent prices. The older they are, generally the cheaper they are.

I'm personally a fan of Taylor Made. Just starting off, any of the offerings from Taylor Made, Ping, Calloway, or Cobra should work. Heck, when I started, I was gifted a set of irons and woods from my uncle, and a Walmart driver. The woods were actually WOOD. They made do until I found out I loved to play and then invested in better gear. If he takes off with it, get him a swing coach and fitted for clubs. Makes a huge difference.

I got my 2 ball odyssey putter from 2nd swing for a steal several years ago. I like them, but as mentioned above, some folks don't.

2nd swing is good for sure. Next round golf on eBay is good and ships quick. If you see something on next rounds eBay site they’ll usually send you an offer if you watch the item. I bought a set of callaway rogue irons from them this spring. Of course I can’t play now but had a good buying experience. I second what @gcr0003 said about ping. I played ping when I first started and they are very forgiving.

I tried a LAB putter when they first came out and boy was it amazing. There’s no way I could afford one though. I found an older Bobby Grace Vfoil mallet putter, added a little lead tape, and got pretty close to the feel of a LAB. The older BG putters are pretty easy to find but have gone up in price.

Thanks for the info about Ping guys. That’s what I’m looking for, clubs that are forgiving while he learns technique then upgrade from there.

Good time of year to find second hand options. Guys will trade in clubs they’ve used for a year or two so they can buy new and start getting ready for next year. Similar to guys who buy a new flagship bow every year or two. If you’ve got a golf store near you not named Golf Galaxy I’d recommend checking in there. They’ll likely have a simulator and he can swing used ones and see what works best for him. I picked up my irons for less than half price this year because they were traded in, last years model, and not moving quick because they have a stiffer flex than most folks swing. eBay and second swing are good resources too for sure.
