Inseason Practice

I will shoot an arrow or 2 each month throughout the year and I got a field point that goes on hunts with me if I wanted target shot out in the woods....I get plenty of target practice tuning arrows and rarely just go out in the yard and shoot for no reason.

Many years ago when I just started archery hunting, I hunted just about 30days for one buck only to miss him broadside within 20yds due to a bowsight issue.

I had shot a day or two before and all was good, but was nearly a foot low on that day. I thought I bumped the sight, might have been the peep. I'm still like, damn.
Whenever I mess up it’s ALWAYS equipment error. At least that’s what I tell everybody.

Oh, it was definitely the equipment ;)

A few years ago I had a fall away rest develop a sluggish drop while afield. Shot an 8pt that day and the rest was still falling while the deer was running off with a hole in him. He didn't go far. Wonder how much "correction" my shot had from that faulty rest. Hit was perfect, lol.

Similar happened this year to a guy I know. Drop away locked up. Wrecked his vanes and the arrow sounded like a kid on a bike with a playin card in his spokes. missed a by a substantial margin.

Dang it, I actually missed a giant that morning not long before I got that 8pt. Equipment failures always happen at the worst times, lol.

Yeah this was a buddy of one of the guys in my camp. Got down that morning and had to drive into to town and either got his rest fixed or put a new one on. He ended up killing a big doe before the weekend was over but the failure on a good buck was painful for him. Esp. since we kept reminding him how important it is to have your crap tuned and dialed before you go hunt. Not a good idea to screw the pooch around the guys I hunt with. They buy salt in bulk. ;)

And that’s why I use a whisker biscuit and always will.

I shoot a drop away however I have to admit that the simplicity of a whisker biscuit has a certain value. There is a definite value to less moving parts.

For the OP, issues I hear so often with peep movement is one of the reasons I got rid of mine. Added a cheap kisser button and never looked back. I've taken 5 deer since.

I have a 3d range in my yard out to 110yds, i shoot every day if im home, 10-20 a day minimum in off season and during 1 shot at each yardage from 10-100. Ill shoot in the moneings before afternoon hunts. I can put a bow down for over a year and still pick one up and drill tacs but shooting everyday really keeps the confidence high more than anything, if im away from home for 3-5 days without shooting i can feel my lack of confidence while hunting. Its all about the reps.
I also have 3D targets in the yard and sometimes just walk outside and shoot five arrows. Call it good. Go back in. Almost like going to the bathroom except I can’t post on SH forum when practicing.

But I'm old or at least feel that way at times. (53) I have a clarifier in my peep to help me see my pins clearly. With all accessories, things can move. Peeps, sights, rests, kissers etc. I could have avoided a miss (possibly 2) if I had simply checked my equipment during the season.

I keep up practice till late season OR whenever I'm done for the year. I love it AND I know it matters. I'll be out there tomorrow for a few rounds I'm sure.
