Is it different here?

I belong to another site and we have a hunting contest. For the past four or five years we have guys that show up for the sign up and then are never heard from again. This year my captain called them out and one guy got all indignant saying he basically didn't have time. So if he couldn't have a few minutes a day to join in and post why did he join in the first place?
I'm not in Saddlehunter contest this year but next year I was planning on joining in. Do we have the same issues here?

I would say it's the same here. Last year for the most part the team I was on was very active. But with the influx of new members this year it seams like there are quite a few not participating that much. It's just the rules that will limit people. Like here you have to shoot the deer out of a saddle, but can use any weapon. The other site your on is bow only, so it limits ways people can hunt. I shot a nice buck this year, but couldn't post to this contest because I shot him from the ground walking in. So no saddle.

We still have that problem but it is not as bad as other sites. I have a minimum post rule to make it so only people who are active members will participate. Unfortunately we had people posting like crazy who had only been members for a week just to get in the contest. Guess who some of the people who haven't been heard from again are?? But generally we have great participation in the contest, and in the end it is only for fun and bragging rights. I have an idea in my head for next year that will reduce the people who don't participate even further :).

I am glad it is for fun and bragging rights because I did not put any points on the board but still participated. I hope I have more success next year. This is my worst result and first zero since I started to hunt deer. There could be some people still in the contest and participating but not posting because the result is a big fat zero. Pride may prevent speaking the truth.

I have two guys who I hunted with this year that got three deer each. Both used bait. I did not bait myself but I do generally bait for my daughter who only hunts a few times each year and I did hunt in her spots a couple of times as I got desperate for a result. Still her best encounter with a nice buck was on public land with no bait 5 yards behind her on the ground and busted - fun.

I had 3 good opportunities with nice deer- no bait. I call those opportunities great learning experiences or blown chances this year. I wondered if I should enter the contest next year because of my poor hunting abilities.

Also we are all different in our opportunities. How much work pressure - harvest for me. How many family responsibilities - elderly parents for me and for some guys small children. And how experienced, how diligent, how committed, and how much time do we have as a hunter. We are all different. How much time do we have to scout. How close are our hunting opportunities. How understanding is our spouse. Do we have a spouse or are we single. Are we starting a small hunting business like some guys on this site. I also had a cough for the last eight weeks. I tried hunting and sucking fisherman's friends. That was a waste of time because I was too noisy with my cough. I did see 7 nice deer despite the cough with no good opportunities.

If it is for fun... I do not care who wins. I am interested in the stories, the pictures and the bragging and the gained hunting knowledge from ordinary guys. It makes me want to get a big 10 pointer before I can no longer hunt. Though I am encouraged by the hunters who are over 70 years old.

Did I drag team 4 down... YUP... I think G2 did the same zero for his team last year. Do I care about failing my team... a wee bit. If I am in the contest next year I will give grace to the ones that fail to produce.

That said do not enter if you don't participate. If you did not produce but entered... be humble and admit that you failed this year. You are not the only one.

True. But you are still active here snd that's the upside to this site. I may have misunderstood but I think that was part of the OP's issue.

Amen. This year I ended a dry spell I am embarrassed about so when an avid hunter posts a zero but tried I have no issues.
Also I had a positive from entering this contest that occurred for me personally. When I thought I was going to fail I sat down and looked at a few things. Some of you may have seen my post about failing to get it done before the gun season. It was 100% my fault of course. I made a commitment to be more organized since that time in order to have more time in the woods when it counts. The result so far: Happier spouse and 1 deer down.

Yes I was just commenting on that it's the same where ever you go. You still get people signing up, then a no show during contest.

I like these contest and enjoy being part of them. It's like deer camp, a place to come back to at the end of the day and share stories and bs with like minded people.

That's the big thing with these contest. The guy that stops in every day or two and post to there team and doesn't shoot anything is more valuable to the team. Then you have the guy that shoots one deer and posts it with no story, then you never hear from him. I much rather have the guy that post and doesn't shoot a deer.

I think other than the captain I had the most posts on my team. I never even brought my bow up for a shot. The thing is I followed the string so when someone from my team posted I got a message and I went and checked it out. I would congratulate, give advice, or just shoot the bull but I participated. This year was horrible I think only four out of twelve participated .

I really am happy that I got to participate. I will be honest, even though it’s just for fun, sometimes it was a motivator to get me out the door! Even my wife was pushing me to pull my share for the team. Thanks for the opportunity and I look forward to next year too! Oh by the way, is it still going on? I’ve still got 7 weeks of bow season to upgrade my doe?

Amen!

It made me want to get out sometimes when I otherwise might not have gone.

I perhaps didn't post enough beyond my entries. I didn't really realize it was an expectation. I do love the "hunting camp" analogy and agree with the benefits of regular engagement. That's what I love so much about this site. It creates such great community out of folks who might not otherwise get the chance to meet. I try to explain that to my otherwise supportive wife when it seems like I'm spending too much time "stuck in my phone" or on my "Manbook".

If I make the cut in future iterations I'll know to talk it up some more.

And dang it I am jealous of folks that have seven more weeks of joy! Only 261 days until my next bow hunt!

Don't feel bad I haven't scored ether but are season doesn't end until January 26. Hope to score before it's over. Sometimes we get so busy with everything that it's hard to find time. Better luck next year.
