I just moved to Minneapolis last year with my family to attend seminary. I recently heard about saddle hunting and would love to get into it. However, the initial cost is a bit steep for a full-time student trying to support a family of 6 (3 young boys and a baby girl due in August! My wife is looking forward to some female company.) If anyone has a saddle that they would be willing to part with at a discounted cost I'd be most grateful. If someone lives within a few hours drive of the Twin Cities I would be willing to come out to your place and do any kind of manual labor to work off the cost. I have some climbing sticks so I'd just be looking for the standard saddle setup and a platform of some sort.

I don't have a saddle for you, but if you need some help on places to hunt around the Cities let me know. I'm in Apple Valley and typically hunt the south Cities. Where in the Cities are you?

Consider making a fleece saddle. Its a comfy, inexpensive option. There are discussions and instructions on this site, and on YouTube. Major costs after that would be your tether rope and a couple of carabiners.

I have a sit drag I will give you to make your own saddle if you’re Interested in going that route.

Thanks so much for your generosity. I have decided to try to make a saddle based off of the Wraptor design. I’ll post some pics when it is done.

A sit drag is a fine option, one I still use
there is a walkabout in the classifieds I wouldn't hesitate to purchase if I was in your shoes,
there are a couple of saddles for less that $200 new,
if you like the Anderson sling style look at the recon its like $150 shipped hard to beat IMHO very comfortable

If OP does not need one anymore. I would appreciate a saddle setup if anyone is still offering. I'm new to saddle hunting, my plan this season is to go up with my dependable climber, then split the time between sitting in climbing and rock climbing harness/DIY sit-drag. Waiting for the season to be over before I get sticks during off season sales. Thank you for your consideration.

I have an unmodified sit drag that I would donate to you if you’re interested in building your own saddle.

Thank you for your offer! I actually have a DIY sit drag made from pieces of one of my old Army backpack, tapes, and a belt from a safety harness, its crude and ugly but the basic idea of a saddle is there. Never sew anything before in my life. Would the popular sit drag requires any sewing done? If someone else need the sit drag first I'm ok letting them have it. I want to test out my setup first so I can understand basic principles.

What size waist are you. I can let you borrow a saddle for at least half the season or really until i need it back for a buddy that is thinking about trying it. Just come pick it up your not far. If you need tether/linemans or sticks and that stuff i have that too.

Its a mantis. So sitdrag might be more comfy...lol

That's what I been hearing. The Phantom fixed alot of issues with the Mantis. I'm going to stick with my DIY SitDrag for now. But do you have spares sticks? I have climbers and have never used sticks before. Well, my father-in-law has a set of 30 years old Ameristep Rapid Rail that I swear are alot lighter than what they look. But I dont really want to drag those things around if I dont have to.

HumanCreed, I got you. I sent a PM with details. I need to flip thru what I have and see the answers to your questions so I can see what I don't need that might fit what you are looking for.
Either way, I will have something to send for you to try. If it doesn't work out for you, you can pass it along the next time someone is looking to start on a budget.
