It’s a kitty

20+ years ago my high school girlfriend and I were sitting out by a fire after dark at her family's hunting cabin in Western MD. I heard what I thought was a bobcat scream in the field behind us. I grabbed the poor excuse for a flashlight that we had with us and asked her if she wanted to see how close we could get to a bobcat. She said "no way" but, reluctantly followed me as I started sneaking out through the field. I didn't go very far before I could see cat eyes reflecting back at me. I kept creeping closer, the cat would stare at me for a few minutes, then turn it's head and take a few steps away from me, then stop and stare at me again. I finally got to within less then 20 yrds and my dim flashlight lit up enough of the cat that I started thinking "this is a huge bobcat" a mountain lion never crossed my mind. At this point the cat was no longer walking away and was just standing there watching me. A few more steps and I saw the long tail. At that point I realized what I was looking at and slowly backed my way back to the safety of the cabin.

The problem was it was close to my girlfriends curfew and the cat walked off in the direction of my truck, which was a several hundred yard walk from the cabin. I had to choose between taking my chances with the cat or her dad. She was more scared of the cat but, I was more scared of her dad so we headed for the truck, making a bunch of noise along the way.
