So I’ve finished my saddle, and in the process have learned a lot about my new machine. I learned how to reset the timing, adjust the bobbin case, and adjust the needle. But for the life of me, I can’t figure out why I keep bending/breaking needles.

To clarify, I’m not even stitching through the heaviest stuff when this happens. Sometimes it’s only 2 layers of webbing. I can clearly see where it was hitting the bobbin case, but I’ve since tightened it, and I also adjusted the needle over-because it too was out of whack and showing signs of hitting the top plate. If I hand crank I can feel it hit something at the bottom stroke, and it stops. If I kinda wiggle it back and forth the needle seems to jiggle past whatever it’s bottoming out on.

Any thoughts?

Does it do it on like 2 layers of cordura or other fabric?

I can't speak to that particular machine but make sure needle is turned in correct direction and that it's pushed up all the way

What about when not sewing? Does it hit then?

I had a similar machine and it did that. Found out something shifted inside the housing and was bent so I return it since it was still under warranty. You can find a sewing machine shop and they might be able to fix it

Your feed dogs might not be in time to the needle. If the needle is in the fabric when the feed dogs move the fabric, the needle will bend and hit the needle plate when it comes down. The feed dogs should only feed the fabric when the needle is up.

I think you might be right. I’ve adjusted just about everything else. Might as well teach myself how to do that. Any advice?

If thata the case it should simply be a matter of identifying where the mechanism that drives the feed dogs attaches, lossening that attachment, turning hand wheel until feed dogs are in the position they should be in in relation to needle stroke, and then tightening the attachment back.

I went home over lunch and hand cranked it a few times. I feel like the dogs are in time. Maybe ever so slightly.

Not sure if this helps, but the needle keeps bending to the left before it breaks.

I have seen the thread tail pull the needle to the side. I am not sure of the conditions.

Are you sure the timing is correct? That’s what it sounds like to me.

Is the thread going through the presser foot and then to the side or back? If you are holding it to the side without going through the foot it could pull the needle that way.

No, It's going straight back. When I have more time I'm going to try playing with the dogs. If it's not that I'm calling the Home Ec. teacher I work with!

It has to go down and through the presser foot. If the thread pulls the needle it then pulls it straight down and not to the side.

What size needle are you using? If I use one that is too small and have the thread tension set correctly for cordura, sometimes the thread deflects the needle as its descending and causes it to strike the bobbin case or the throat plate and break
