JX3 whale tail safety concern

Have you tried this in the field yet in an actual hunt? I usually have gear stuffed in the back (dump pouches in my case...others may have a pack). The fork doesn't actually sit that tight against to the back of my head. Try setting it up just like you would for a hunt and see if you still have a concern.
I thought the same thing my fork wasn’t that far forward when loaded up to hunt.

We don't start until Oct 1, but I have set it up like I will be taking it out. Until it gets cold I don't really have anything I need to pack back there. The last picture shows it is sitting on the hook and not pressed up tight to my back. The only way I could get it away farther would be to lift it off the hook and just have the leg straps holding it closed. But doing that without something back there to keep pressure pushing out, just makes it loose and bounce around some while walking.

Thanks for posting this safety concern. A backwards fall could push the JX3 up and your head back. That would hurt. I fell backwards the other day while hunting in thorns but don't have a JX3.

The fork does retract all the way down. I’ve never been concerned about it but if you are put a piece of rubber over the top of it.

Does that fork not retract lower?
In mine it retracts level to the seat

When you say level to the seat, are you saying that yours slides down all the way so forks are not sticking out? Just curious. Here is mine retracted as far as it will go but they still stick out

No that looks right

This picture confused me.

Hey. I just wanted to show you my set up and where the fork sits. As you can see its nowhere close. I've even left the fork up by accident and never felt it. But I think the suggestions to cover the whale talk make sense if the problem persists.

Yeah a pack or gear with any thickness at all pushes the fork back... Also if you carry a small stack of sticks across the top - and I do - the fork is blocked by the sticks.

Pretty sure it is my shorter body size after looking at your pics. With the belt tight around my waist and shoulder straps snugged down (like it would be if hauling something heavier) it rides higher on me, putting the fork closer. If I loosen the belt, or undo it completely, it rides more like you are showing, but then all the weight is on my shoulders instead of waist, which isn't a big deal until hauling. I'm not too worried about it because most of the time I won't be hauling loads, but still ordered some Instamorph to cover it when I am. Thanks for the pics.

I have the original Guido's web and the whales tail is fixed and can't be moved unless you modified it. I have never had it hit my head although when climbing I've had it catch the top of my rubber boots.
