Kill Kit

I’m with @Nutterbuster. It also depends on your style of hunting. If you are going to stack them up like cord wood, a saw and heavy knife with gut hook is nice to have. If you’re going to kill less than six over a three month season one sharp knife is all I would carry. Last few years I carried a gerber vital but never liked the point on the replaceable blades. This year I carried a four inch filet knife and one of the ceramic V style sharpeners. I found that I don’t need the sharpener is f I’ll be a little cautious when cutting the legs off.

There are better blade options for replaceabel type blades over the #60s that come with them. 70s & 22s to start.

I don't use much. Most of my kills I drag or pack out. I do keep 2 knifes in my pack. One is a small folding multi blade knife with a small bone saw for splitting the pelvic. The other knife is backup fixed blade knife. When packing I just put the deer on my pack with no bags. Dragging I just use my tether and attach to my harness and pull. The one thing I didn't see mentioned, that I use on every kill, is a roll of electrical tape. It's light and can be used for multiple things. Once I put a tag on a deer, I wrap it in tape so it doesn't fall off. Also I have used it to strap a deer down to pack. Also use it to wrap deer legs together to make drag/pack out easier. Another time I broke a buckle on my boot, so I just wrapped it up in electrical tape, held that way all week.

great idea.

Had anyone tried the "rectifier" for gutting your deer? It looks pretty slick was thinking about getting one for next year

Never tried it - didn't really want to deal with putting that back in my pack after using it. Pretty bulky too.
Yeah good point, if I did I'd definitely keep it in a designated gallon ziploc bag or something. Working around the anus is always the trickiest part for me, whether I'm field dressing or if I drag it and got em hung up.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find some info on a compact kill kit. Coming from hunting in a hunt club and use of fourwheelers and gonna start hunting public. The need for packing out a deer is something I'm interested in and tried searching kill kits but the forum result says my key words are too short. Thanks in advance.

I place an AK moose quarter bag, Havalon and three blades in a one gallon ziplock. I’ve boned out a bunch of animals and it doesn’t get any simpler.

You can replace the quarter bag with an old cotton pillowcase, they work great as well. I just have a bunch or quarter bags so I use them.

I used the Butt Out once..........and I stress once. Thing was full of poop and then you have to clean it. Gross. Butcher string for me after that experience.

I use a buttout every deer I gut. Just clean it when I get back home. Pull it out tie it off gut the deer and pull everything right out. One shot and done. Friends in PA made me try a few years ago and I’ve always kept it on me since. Even have one in my toolbox in the truck incase a friend Calls for help and I don’t have my bag on me.

I core out the anus and then I gut...when I get to the pelvic I take my bone saw and cut a section out of the pelvic. Pull the guts out and done. No need to tie off.

My kill kit consists of this:
https://www.havalon.com/hydra-brick-red-60a115sw
rubber gloves
zip ties for tags to antler and/or whatever needs to be zipped shut.
25' of amsteel or 550 cordage. In case I need to tie a back leg to a tree or hang a deer for whatever reason and/or set a trip wire...

Are you going for the gutless method where you just pack out the quarters, backstraps, and head?

For that, I keep this in my vehicle (I walk back and drop off my bow and hunting pack and pick this up).

On it, I have a bag lashed which contains

6 small hanging LED lights to illuminate my work area (sold on amazon, look like light bulbs with a clip)
gutting gloves
quartering bags, but scent free garbage bags work
zip ties, paracord, and bungee cords to attach quarters to frame pack
a clean tarp to serve as a work area if I need it
Camillus bone saw

I might throw in an extra knife and cheap headlamp this year and maybe some wet wipes and a few bottles of water
