I need a fid for splicing 1/4 amsteel, I don't want plastic and don't want to pay $50 for a kit. I know some have used knitting needles. What size do I need? I'm thingking a 10.5 or 11. Found some charts, a 10.5 is 6.5mm outside diameter, a 1/4" is equal to 6.35, that might be to close for inserting the amsteel in the needle. Can't find the inside diameter of the needle. A size 11 is 8mm outside diameter.

I think I used a 10mm knitting needle to resplice my cranfords ropes, and I want to say it was too big for the amsteel I had. But if I was you I'd just take a piece of rope to Walmart/Hobby-Lobby/Michael's and see what fit. That's what I did. An aluminum knitting needle costs maybe $5, and once cut and deburred makes an awesome fid.

D Splicer these are worth every penny in my opinion. I have the smallest one for rigging my spearfishing shooting line and the next size up for all of my hunting stuff. These make splicing super easy almost effortless. I also have used just standard picture hanging wire from the hardware store, works well but tends to not hold up for long after bending it a few times.

For 1/4" I use a 9mm needle and a 2.5mm for 7/64. Has served well so far and they come in 2 packs for around $5 or less.
