I have hunted KS before..private ground. Killed some solid deer. Anyone have experience on public in NC or NE KS? Just looking to figure out a bit about the pressure to expect. I do understand that getting drawn for a a NR tag this year may be difficult. Just looking for some experienced thought on this. Thank you in advance. Hope your New Year is off to a good start!

I've hunted public in NC Kansas the 5 out of the last 6 years and the pressure these last 2 years was the worst I've seen out there. The walk in land is absolutely pounded we were walked in on almost every sit we tried on walk in this past season. The bigger lake areas aren't much better. To put it in perspective the first time we went 6 years ago we hunted all week and saw two other trucks parked hunting walk in the entire week we were there. If you have any more specific questions feel free to shoot me a PM. If I ever go again it'll be early season or late season maybe week of Thanksgiving.

What he said. Our public has seen a huge spike in hunting pressure, not saying it ain't still going to produce good bucks but there are going to be way less then there were a couple years ago. Not only is the out of state crowd really showing up, the social media trend "I'm cool cuz I shot it on public" is putting a lot of locals on public that have drove by it for years.

Thank you for the input. I appreciate it. About what I figured. I have upland hunted alot in KS. I started when WIHA started back in 98 I think? I have seen alot of the ground in NE NC KS...nice country! Thinking of bowhunting some of it but man I don't want to battle crowds.

Does anybody have any experience hunting south east Kansas? I live right on the border in northwest arkansas. I've been duck hunting some WIHA this year and have had good luck and am debating putting in for a tag for the 2022 season

I’m in NWA as well.
Until last year, I was hunting South/SE KS and for the short drive from NWA, it was worth it.

Were you primarily hunting WIHA or public? If the deer pressure is anything like the duck pressure, there isn't a whole lot. I knew a couple guys who have had a hard time drawing tags, but if I put in fingers crossed.

Also, what part of NWA are you in?

I hunted my last season there this year. I believe thats 8 in a row. The price tag to product ratio with the increased pressure no longer makes it worthwhile to me.

I live in NE Oklahoma and I go up into Kansas quite a bit to hunt ducks, quail, and dove in the SE Kansas area. A lot of the walk in is hard grazed cattle pasture that doesn’t have much cover but some looks pretty good. I saw several nice bucks on walk in this year. Elk city wma has always looked good to me. Generally the further west you go the fewer people.
