Let’s Talk About Smokers

Bbq dude here. If you want to build something for “cheap”. Google a Ugly Drum Smoker. Best smoker I’ve ever owned if you don’t need to cook for a ton of folks. Can easily build one in a couple hours, outside of prepping / cleaning the drum. Don’t get food grade as you’ve got to clean out the liner anyway.

Don’t buy a cheap offset. You’ll spend all your time tending the fire.

Weber grill is great too and doubles a grill.

If ya wanna get into smokers... I love my backwoods.

We used to have an old porcelain lined fridge (at least we told each other it was porcelain) with a hot plate in the bottom and a metal bowl on top of the plate for the wood chips. Worked great!

The Pit boss is good for the money. My only complaint is it dosent cook evenly left - right across it. That can be good at times, and bad at others. I also have a masterbuilt smoker I purchased before I replaced my grill. The Masterbuilts are good for the price. But if I had to do it again, I would get something with an hopper. If you want to put a pork butt on at night you can't keep feeding wood chips if your sleeping.
The pittboss makes a good smoked chicken. I haven't played with Ribs to much with it. I usually put them in the smoker. Haven't tried to do a pork butt on it yet.
I figured I could by 3 Pitt boss's to a Tregar or a green egg. Since I leave my grill out side, I went with the cheaper one. Didn't want to look that much money sitting in the snow.

A kamado doesn't require constant tending since it burns slow. I have an Acorn Chargriller kamado. Pellet grills seem very nice but I have no experience with them. I should get that rack of ribs out of the freezer and start the kamado. Thanks.

I have a green mountain pellet smoker and absolutely love it. It has wifi so I can control it anywhere and green mountain has an attachment to make woodfire pizzas.

I have a kamado Joe. I use it more than my oven. Pizzas, fish, Boston butts, steaks, wings, ribs, chickens, loins, whatever! It’s great!

I got a masterbuilt electric a couple months ago. Its been fun but I'd like to go to add a drum style to my fleet this year so I can do full racks of ribs

There were five pellet smokers at Lowes, where I work, for $180. They were non-stock , on clearance. I was trying to find them about a month ago in top stock. Finally found them and some guy came in and bought three of them for family members. Smoking hot price. :D

I use a akorn. Works great for my needs and makes good food. Added a WiFi temp controller so I don't have to adjust vents at night and can change the temp from my bed if need be.

I have a RECTEC
I could not be happier with it
Cooks great
Great customer service
Heavy made with a great warranty

i have backwoods insulated smokers, trager pellet pooper, weber 22 grill/smoker. I've owned/built all sorts of various sizes from a gas tank to a 300 gal drum on a trailer. the best, hands down was my big trailer smoker. but.. i only cooked with wood. and it ate a log every 20-40 minutes.. for 14+ hours. it was impossible to cook hot and fast on (on purpose anyway) and that's how I like to cook. My favorite small one was the Ugly Drum Smoker (can buy one already built for 300-400 at Acadamy and maybe BassPro. After years of sitting outside and watching smoke roll, I discovered I liked sleep more. And got better gear. I used to do a lot of catering and competitions. now that I'm just cooking for the friends and family, my bigger backwoods is plenty. I can cook 6 butts, or 12+ racks of ribs, or3-4 briskets on that. Fire it up, get it to temp, load and go to bed. it's awesome. but it was $3000. UDS can be built for under 150, and makes better food in my opinion, looks badass on the patio and is easy to repair when or if things go awyre.

X2 on the Ugly Drum Smoker. I've tried several others (never pellet smokers). The UDS is by far the easiest I've used to get to and maintain temp.

Two things I would add 1.get good wood to smoke with 2. Get a wireless temperature probe for the meat and the grill.
